Just had fish and chips for the first time since diagnosis. Waiting two hours to see what it does to my levels - will be interesting x

Ooh, yes, let us know how you get on and hope you enjoyed it!

Hope you enjoyed them and that there won't be too much of a spike so that you can have them again 🙂

Mmmm yummy yum . My treat is battered sausage and chips just small portion though hehe. Hope it don't cause any havoc with your levels x

The good & bad thing about living in the states is that we have very few Chip shops..... The nearest one I can remember seeing was in Vancouver BC

Ok - so the two hours have passed - 8.8 - not as bad as I expected. Before the meal it was 5.6. After my usual healthy meal it would be somewhere in the sixes. I won't be doing it on a regular basis cos it's not great for loosing weight! I did really enjoy them though! x

I'd say that's a good result @Kathy1960 ! 🙂 An occasional treat you can really enjoy 🙂

Kathy - I don't want to appear to be raining on your BBQ, but for a complex meal like fish and chips; fasct acting carbs, potentially slowed response due to the amount of fat involved, plus protein, it is usually worth continuing to test every 30 minutes beyond the 2 hours, to see how long it takes to get back to your starting point. Whilst they don't always involve stratospherically high spikes, sometimes they can lead to elevated levels for several hours.

We're all different, so you may just have had a decent result. Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for that! It's not raining on my BBQ! It's really interesting. I will have to do it again and test every 30 mins - not for a while though! How long would you recommend to keep on testing afterwards? X

Using your last example, I would continue testing until I was back to 5.6 (i.e. my pre-meal reading). It could be one extra test, or a few more, but nobody can tell.

In honesty Kathy, with a Hba1c of 36, I wouldn't be fretting over an occasional fish and chip meal that temporarily bring you slightly out of the NICE upper range.
I do it occasionally too and do check for a few hours afterwards. It's not a good regular food choice but you're not remotely near even pre-diabetic range. Having said that, I notice you're on metformin and I'm doing it diet only.
You're still on 2000g of Metformin with a Hb of 36? Hopefully you might be able to reduce/come off that at some point. Well done! 🙂

Thanks Amigo - yes - still on 2000g of metformin. I've been thinking it should maybe be reduced. I have an appt with the practice nurse next week to discuss the latest results - it takes a while to get a 40 minute appt and I had to cancel once- so it's been a while since I had my blood test. I'm going to see what she has to say and then probably make an appt with the dr to discuss medication. I wonder how much of the result is down to the metformin and how much down to my diet and excercise changes - it's hard to know. But I suppose one way to find out is to reduce the medication and see what happens. X

I really used to enjoy fish n chips but sadly these days it always seems soggy and grease soaked, There are some great places to buy it in Brighton but sadly thats a half hour drive away for me. Hope it was good 🙂

It was really good Rob! I know what you mean about soggy and greasy. A mobile fish and chip caravan type thing has recently started parking up near us for a few hours on Thursday and Friday evenings and he does a really good job - cooks each one to order x
