Hi all

I am aged 59, diagnosed Type 2 two years ago - currently controlled by diet / exercise, albeit I have just had that awful flu, so not a lot of exercise recently. My last Hba1c was 5.9 which is the same as last year.

I am enjoying reading the various views and learning so much about how this condition plays out in real life, from people who have so much more experience of coping with it than me. It is good to have so many committed people to turn to for help if needed.

I found the whole Low Gi carb / low carb / no carb thing a bit confusing. I am still in the low Gi carb camp but intend to explore what practical recipies are available in the other camps to see if they might be better.

Best wishes - Jaunty

Hi Jaunty, and welcome! That HbA1C is pretty good - looks like you're doing a pretty good job! 🙂

Thanks Northerner,

I try to behave, but occasionally I fall off the wagon. My BG readings went haywire during the recent bout of Flu - does anyone know why that happens? - especially when we usually eat less when we feel ill.

As I understand it, illness will cause the release of stress hormones which cause the liver to release some of its glycogen stores which then raise blood sugar. So, even if you aren't eating, your sugars will increase as your body tries to fight the infection. In your case, as you aren't able to able to 'manually' increase the insulin (by injecting), I don't really know the solution to bringing the levels down, especially as you can't exercise - perhaps some of the Type 2s here can shed more light on this? Has your doctor given you any advice for when you fall ill?

raised BG levels during illness

Hi Northerner

Your explanation make a lot of sense, but I have not been given any advice from my GP as to what steps can be taken to reduce the BG levels during illness. I will make a point of asking him.

Best regards - Jaunty🙂
