Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed type 2 in june this year
BG 12.7
HBA1C 62
Prescribed metformin, - not great , and IBS flare up … changed to the long acting version and seems more settled / stable
Have been told not to test BG every day so don’t know how I’m doing really but think I have low BG / hypo symptoms sometimes even though they told me I shouldn’t get hypo

On Monday I have a phone call with the diabetes nurse to find out my BG and HBA1C (and possibly cholesterol?) - I’m worried about what happens if the numbers havent reduced ?

On Tuesday , five months after diagnosis, I finally start the diabetes online education sessions - I’m kind of feeling I was just left to get on with it on my own

You might feel false hypos as your body is used to high levels of glucose and is having a bit of a tantrum about the loss of the warm sugary bath it has learned to expect.
Metformin alone would not lower levels it is more a stopping them rising effect, impeding the release of glucose and lowering insulin resistance - it is a subtle difference, but it does mean there is little to worry about if you can take the tablets without internal upsets.
If you have the equipment to test your levels after eating then it will be really useful for you to see how you are managing - even if you only check fully on one day a month, to know how you are coping is a huge help in assessing how you are doing.

Hi C-C, sounds like a pretty worrying time at the mo.

If your numbers aren't down then they're just look at other options such as changing aspects of your medication or diet.

There's is no right or wrong as there are many things that can impact your levels and at only 5 months, you're still working things out.

Re testing, it really depends on the professional you speak to. It's difficult to understand the impact your meals are having if you're not testing daily. I'd do it at least for a week so you can get an understanding on whether your meals agree with you or not.

Phone appointment done ✔️
My HBA1C is down from 62 to 49 so nurse was very pleased with steps I have taken and metformin is doing its job
She has recommended that I start statins tho as my cholesterol is 4.8 and good fats number too low - she said it’s probably genetic as they were also low in 2008 , but my bad fats have gone up since then ….

start the diabetes education sessions tomorrow ( online) so hopefully will be able to improve numbers some more

thanks for the replies - I do get myself in a bit of a worry state when I have to speak to the medical peeps

Great HbA1c result. Cholesterol is a funny thing. Over 20 years ago I lost 63 pounds, and my cholesterol went up! I was told it was the way my liver functioned. I tried statins over 18 months but had very bad side effects so got taken off them. When I did my diabetes course, I had a number of questions prepared, as I wanted resolution on conflicting information. Best wishes

Congratulations on the great HbA1c reduction @C-C!

You have every right to be very proud of yourself for the work you have put in.

Hope you find the online education sessions helpful tomorrow. 🙂
