Hello All,

So in little over an hour I will have my first appointment with the nurse. I am hoping this will be the start of being provided with some education and support as a person new to this disease. The resources here are wonderful but I really would like to go on a course to tale me through the essentials. My metformin doesn't seem to be doing much and the only dietary advice I get is from this forum.

Is there anything in particular that I should ask the nurse today? With my GP surgery you have to fight for everything

Hi Tanyam82, I am in i similar position, told 4 weeks ago I have diabetes but not sure if type 1 or 2, need to see specialist at hospital, still waiting for an appointment, very confused.

Good luck today!

Well I had a blood reading of 23.8 when the nurse tested and ketones on my urine so have been sent to a&e. A 5 hour wait!

Please let us know how you get on.

My post took hours to update. Level is 14.3 and am now home
Oh dear, that doesn't exactly help you in the long run. When I was first diagnosed, and the GP was baffled ( she was trying to treat me as a Type 2 and getting nowhere because I turned out to be Type 1) she was able to ring the department at the hopsital and speak to a diabetes consultant for advice, and expedite my appointment. And I understand that in our area, non-specialist surgery nurses who are dealing with diabetic people can ring up a specialist DSN at the hospital for advice. I wonder if your surgery can do this. Upping your Metformin doesn't seem to me as if it'll be the long term solution!

Hi Robin. I have another appointment on Monday for our surgery's Diabetes Clinic. I think that nurse may be a bit more informed and I will ask her for some guidance. I feel that the GP's want to push you to hospital because they don't know the answer and the hospitals are confused as to why you've been sent? It is not just in Diabetes but on other areas that I have experienced this. To be honest I have had a few different health issues in the last 9 months and I'm starting to feel very fed up and tired with it all. I'm now at work after only 6 hours sleep. Could do with a day off but life goes on!
