First hospital appointment today

Hi all,

Well the wait is over, got my first appointment at the diabetic clinic today at the hospital, got no idea what to expect from them, just hope all goes well. Been on 3 x 500g metformin a day since xmas and levels are still a bit high I think. So think I am hoping that they can answer thequestions as to why. Any good advice on questions to ask would be appreciated. Appointment is tat 10am. Fingers crossed.
 
Good luck for today, if you keep a record of your blood sugar levels , take it with you, there is nothing sinister in your check up, remember they are bthere to help you so dont be afraid to ask questions.

All clinics are different, but one tip is that if you are offered to see anyone else, whether doctor, nurse, dietician, podiatrist etc then take the chance. It could be a long appointment, with lots of waiting around, so take something to read! 🙂
 
I am at the hospital clinic today too - hope it's a good day for us both (and anyone else).

If you are not already testing, ask if you can have a meter, test strips and lancets so you can keep an eye on your levels yourself. As a type 2 you may have to ask long and loud but it is really the only way for you to keep a record of when you are low/high and what food affects you.

If the metformin isn't really working they might put you on something as well (gliclazide is what I was on at your stage of the game). Don't be frightened of this as they are trying to help you not just burden you with more pills. (Others on here have different views and I stress that this is just MY opinion).

Up until now I have always been treated by my clinic team with respect and have felt that I have an input into my care not just "suffer under their hands" and I hope you get a good response from your clinic too.

I always write anything I want to ask down - I forget things too easily when I'm at the hospital (my blood pressure always goes up there !) so that helps me. My husband comes in with me as two heads are better at remembering than one but you may not want anyone else with you - matter of personal choice really.

I think you may find that questions arise naturally as they take you through things when talking to you. Sorry that all probably doesn't help you much but good luck and let us know how you get on today. 🙂

Hello all,

Appointment yesterday went ok, they want to put me onto glycizide to help me produce more insluin. The diabetic nurse thinks that i might have slow onset type one that they have caught early so we will see how it goes, they want to keep a close eye on things. But apart from that they are happy with the progress that I am making.

Vince13, hope your appointment yesterday went well also.
 
Hi Mulberry, good to hear that the appointment went well, and particularly that they are considering that you may be slow-onset Type 1 - this is often overlooked as a possibility and hopefully means that you will be receiving the most appropriate treatment as time goes on 🙂
