Hi, My first meeting with the Dietian went well, thanks to the Diabetes Forum, I understood the problems some TYPE 1 Diabetics encounter, what I understood that due to my weight loss and
the fact that my Blood Glucose Testing shows that my reading never drop below 4.00 and rarely rise above 5.7, that my HbA1c could be halved, by the next Blood Test, hopefully this will lead to NO MORE self testing, and a reduction in medication or even none ! I hope to control my TYPE 2 Diabetes with exercise, healthy, varied diet and weight loss. Summing up my meeting I would say it was vital, to learn about dealing with Diabetes and the more you eat, the more exercise is good for you. Thanks to the Doctors and DUK Forum for helping to make life with Diabetes easier, Eat what you want, BUT exercise is good for you. Cheers clive55555

I can't imagine never self-testing. I need to know! 🙂 Glad the meeting went well.

Hi Ditto, I never dreamed I would ever have to self-test, I didn't think would be able, But for few weeks no spikes, no change in the tests, just writing down the same numbers. By the way I found An Akins web site that sells LOW CARB food stuffs, cool. Cheers clives55555

Good to hear your meeting went well Clive...hoping to come off the medication in the New Year myself...however...like @Ditto says I can never imagine not self testing...for me managing on diet & exercise only would make me more inclined to test...even we get out BGs down to non-diabetic levels... the issues/difficulties with any undetected rise could still prove a problem.

Hi Bubbsie, to be honest for the last 20 years, I have been living with Heart Disease, Angina, Hypertension,Gall Stones and Mobility Problems, now added Prostate Problems, if Diabetes can be controlled, it will be a problem less, but I do worry about not feeling well, and self monitoring, allows you to self diagnose, unfortunately I will have to rely on NHS Direct for information. Which I have used successfully for years. Living with hearts problems is easier, than Diabetes mostly with Diabetes you feel very ill, with Heart Problems you knocking on heavens door. I wondered if we get to keep the monitor, the Lancets are only £5 for 100, but the Testing Strips £25 Quid a pop!!! Hope all goes well for you in the New Year, and things turn out the way you want. Cheers Bubbsie All the Best clive555555

Clive...not sure if you are prescribed strips on prescription...if so...there's no reason why that should be withdrawn...even more reason to test now if you are going to rely on diet & exercise only...particularly given your other health issues...so important for you...if you're not on a script for strips...I would ask for one...let me know...you've worked hard...about to come off medication...but...as you I and other members are aware...we need to keep it up...actually saving the NHS a small fortune keeping your diabetes under control...keeping yourself as well as you are able to...get back to me...happy to give you a hand if you need it.

Hi Bubbsie, I get everything on Prescription, I get to well looked after by bossy nurses, and I think some firms give free monitors, so you have buy Testing Strips and Lancets off them. We will see what happens, I am having my feet inspected by the Diabetes Nurse on 18th October, maybe that is when I stop monitoring, who knows, will keep you informed with anything I find out. Cheers clive55555

Clive...it has to be your decision whether you want to self monitor...possibly you are looking forward to that freedom...no more finger pricking...no more being dictated to by out testing meters...we can all relate to that...the relief...however...if you feel anxious about not testing...would like to be able to continue the practice...then you should be able to...it's really your decision whether you stop...or continue...its one of the few conditions we can manage on our own...no pressure Clive..but.please think about what you want to do...would feel more comfortable with...before you make any decisions based on your nurses views...good luck next week...as said if you need a hand...be happy to help.

Great news Clive555555! You've clearly made brilliant progress and your results sound fantastic. Always good to hear when members have positive appointments (as we are all more likely to post when things have not gone so well!).

Great news that you are feeling able to stop BG monitoring too. As you say, BG checks are only really useful when they provide you information on which you can act to inform your self-management. If you are just writing down the same numbers and don't need to do anything with the information, there's absolutely no point in poking holes in your fingers :D

If you are concerned about the effect of reducing/stopping your medication on your levels, you might choose to use what strips you have spread over a longer period to just occasionally check every so often (until your existing strips run out or go out of date). Just to keep an eye on things?

Hi Everydayupsandowns (Monitor), been slowly working out, the benefits of Self Testing, I will always have some testing strips and Lancets handy, for the times I may need them, Just like my Blood Pressure Monitor for my heart, when my Blood Pressure OK, I don't use it, when somethings going wrong, I monitor my Heart 3X a day, I can pass any information onto my GP, and adjust Medication, I am hoping to do the same with Blood Glucose, the only sting is £25 for testing strips, if they taken off prescription. Lucky if something is up, I am unwell, straight away, so I won't worry about not recognising symptoms. I don't think my Diabetes will go away, but hopefully I will be able to Monitor and Control it, I now Know what it feels like to have High Blood Sugar, I now know what to expect. Cheers All the Best clive55555
