Hi

I’m new here and have had results as follows:
2018 - 44mmol (pre diabetic)
Feb 2022 - 40mmol (in the clear)
July 2022 - 49mmol

I had recent as part of routine tests to rule out other issues. Never expected it to indicate diabetes although I’ve been very tired, lethargic, hungry, swollen ankles and toes with tingling pains, have had hypo type symptoms with sweating, faintness, needing to eat right now and feeling unwell not long after eating, night sweats where I wake up completely drenched and have to change clothes, use toilet a lot at night etc. I thought it was caused by Adenomyosis, which I’ve had for years. Not long after blood test result I got really blurry vision and couldn’t see a thing, went for advanced eye scan at Boots and they said everything okay, but have floaters in eye and the new prescription didn’t work with my eyes due to fluctuating blood sugar etc. I got blood glucose monitor and started taking fasting reads and before meals and few hours after to see how it compares. Noticed I get high reads some days for all reads and then very low reads next day, like 1.1mmol and under. I have read up on hypo’s, invested in sugary drinks and dextrose tabs for those times it’s so low. Not on any diabetes meds (yet) as haven’t seen doctor yet. I’m so tired, even washing my face is such a big chore. Doctors called a few days after test wanti g to book a repeat test for later this month and then some days after that I got urgent call for appointment with doctor to talk about my results. Does it seem like type 1 or type 2? I’m worried as it changes so quickly and I feel unwell, like drunk, dizzy, tired and thirsty. I’m 38

What did you do between 2018 to Feb 22 to get that lower HbA1C ? I may be wrong, but I think that even Type 1's only tend to get Hypos because the insulin injected doesn't match the carbs eaten (either quantity wise or time wise).

Possibly reactive hypoglycaemia ?

If it is that, or even if it's Type 2, simplest thing is to reduce the carbohydrates (starches as well as sugars) in your diet. But don't cut them out too fast because you will get those continuing blurry vision because of the body not being used to your current blood glucose levels.

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t do anything much different, but did start eating healthier from end 2021. I noticed on days I don’t eat pasta or bread my reads are too low the next day though. I also had glucose fasting plasma test of 6.2 last June also. My bloods are normal apart from CPR which is 36.

Hi ConfusedSA and welcome to the forum. Hopefully you will find some help and support from the good people on here.

Looking at your HbA1C readings they don’t seem too bad and you are only just in the diabetic range. Remember that they give you your average blood glucose over the previous 2 to 3 months so they aren’t showing anything too drastic.

I’m surprised you are saying you are getting hypo symptoms and reporting very low readings on some days - at 1.1 mmol/l I would be passed out on the floor! Hopefully this was an incorrect reading from your BG meter? Even so, without taking insulin it seems strange that you are getting lows so perhaps something else is happening here to bring you down so low? Could your Adenomyosis cause fluctuating BG ? Sounds like it would be worth chatting over with your doctor for some help.

I can’t answer your question about whether it’s Type 1 or 2, both can give symptoms of excessive thirst, tiredness and peeing a lot (the body’s way of trying to get rid of excess sugar). From your age I think the doctor may start assuming it is Type 2, but it is entirely plausible to be late onset Type 1. The only way to confirm for sure is to get a GAD / C-Peptide test which will indicate an immune system attack of the beta cells in your pancreas and point to Type 1.

I would not panic and wait to discuss your concerns with your doctor. The BG highs and lows must be annoying but I’m sure they will help you get it under control. Hopefully this has helped you a bit and that you’ll get in a better, more stable position soon. Take care and let us know how you get on!

Thanks for the reply. I’ll look into those tests you mentioned.
There is so much to ask the doctor, it’s a little overwhelming and scary. My grandfather was diabetic and had a double stroke etc and my mum had a TIA stroke with blackouts etc, so not sure if that puts me at risk of more serious complications etc. I have my appointment on Tuesday and will update here after. Thanks again everyone for your advice.
