So today marks a week of being diagnosed with Type 2. I knew it was always probably going to come but I just kept putting it off (testing).

I’ve done my first week and me and my partner have managed to get by and it’s been very tough at times. We’re not the best at planning but great at making lists, that never happen.

However, since being on metaformin and trying to relax into it. I’ve made I’d say 2 or 3 mistakes but stopped them.

I opted for a latte when out bowling as that was better than a cider. I got about an inch into the drink and googled it. Turns out, not the best drink haha. So ditched that for a zero drink. I wanted to avoid fizzy!

Then bread rolls, thinking they would be low ish in carbs. When I checked packet after buying them, nearly 45g in each one!

Lastly going out with family and they didn’t have a jacket potato. So i had chips instead, I started dipping them into all types of sauces but then stopped myself. They are bad enough!

I’m happy with my first week. According to my health APP on iPhone my daily sugar average is coming down every day. I’m also not waking up to 10+ BS it’s between 9 and 10.

I know all my numbers are still to high but it’s week one.

Thanks for all the lovely replies, support and information. It’s been absolutely great.

For one week in you are getting an idea of what to think about and becoming more aware of what foods you need to be careful of.
'Fissy' is not always a bad option if you go for diet drinks or americano or tea.
People are often concerned about having ketchup or mayo on foods when it is the chips or the butty which is more of the problem than the sauce.
It will become second nature to check out the carbs and you will soon get a good idea of better choices.

I still have chips occasionally when I go out. I went to a new steak restaurant which just does steak £10 plus sides £4 each. They did chips or brown butter mash. On taste i would definitely have had the mash but checked carbs before i went and had the chips. Helping generous for two. I was pleased as only ate a third. If I went again I'd have two vegetable sides.
I am not good at leaving food. Most cafes if you have a sandwich include crisps. I always ask for without crisps as I suspect I would enjoy a few but keep nibbling.
Not all food is forbidden, check portion size.
You could have half a roll.
Good luck

I know it’s all still too early etc but just looked at my bloods for the week in more detail and my bloods are rising by about 1 or 2 every meal. It was 3+

Feeling alot healthier and my polo shirt drops down a bit now instead of resting on the belly!!!

It is very easy to fall into old eating habits especially when eating out as they are invariably carb heavy. I had to be very mindful to actively choose either a reduced portion or completely forego a high carb option. It does get easier as your palate adjusts and it becomes the new normal. Having said that, my first Christmas with diabetes was difficult to resist the usual treats.
Good that you are becoming more aware and checking what you eat. It will definitely help.

Well done on your achievements in such a short time. Once you are being mindful of what you're eating it does get easier, honest! You don't make any mention of Metformin Tummy, so it may be that you are one of the lucky ones (like me) who can tolerate them without any side effects. I was ok after the first fortnight and haven't had any problems since. I assume you are taking them with food? That is the best way to avoid the trots!

Well funny you should say that. Apparently I should be on 2000mg a day and label was wrong on meds. So need to up it. Currently on 1000g.

I’ve had about 4 episodes of upset tummy in a week. Was at home so no dramas lol

@Damien I might have mention this on your previous post. I had one tablet SR of metformin and didn't go for 5 days ( I usually go at least every 3 days and sometimes more ) On two I didn't go for 8 days although on the eighth day stool normal consistency and size, I then got a bit looser but medication changed 4 days later and metformin reduced to two tablets. I have had occasional diarrhea but don't know if it is as a result of particular meds. Keep a note of how you are feeling with food eaten and bg. Just while you are getting used to things. Idput exercise there too. Moderate exercise eg short walk after eating brings BG down vigorous exercise can temporarily increase it but in longterm is good.

the label may not have been wrong as it is usual to build up the dose gradually over a few weeks so 1 x500mg for a week, then 2 for a week then 3 etc until you get to the dose needed assuming no stomach issues.

So the notes on what the Dr said don’t relate to the sticker. They blamed the pharmacy and tbh they are hit and miss.

I know it’s week 1 but I’m really happy with my start to a healthier lifestyle.

Energy levels are definitely better but I am having some periods when I am tired. I think it’s my body adjusting from the sea food diet !
