Fire chiefs in Wales have spent thousands of pounds on plastic hands on sticks for people to test buttons on their smoke alarms.

Welsh fire services spent more than ?17,000 of public money of plastic sticks with ?hands? designed to press smoke alarm buttons.

The two-foot long red plastic sticks with a white hand and pointing finger at the end were given to households to press the test button on ceiling-mounted smoke alarms during home fire safety checks.

Critics have heavily criticised the ?1.75 sticks claiming people can just use their own fingers or a stick or broom handle to test the alarms.
