Reading Dr Bersteins book, he shows that the back of the fingers , next to the nail, and the next section past the first joint, can be used as well as the sides of the finger tips for BG testing.

Never seen this suggested in the UK, is it ok to use these locations?

Prick your finger between the first joint and the nail, or between the first and second joints (not over the knuckles), as shown by the shaded areas in Figure 4-1. Pricking these sites should be less likely to cause pain and more likely to produce a drop of blood than will pricking your fingers on the palmar side of the hand. You will also be free from the calluses that occur after repeated punctures on the palmar surface of the fingers.

Personally, I'd be reluctant to prick too near the edge of the nail, and prefer to use sides of finger top sections. I would never use "palmar side of hand", as that means the finger tip, opposite side to nail, same side as palm of hand - finger tip is too sensitive, too many nerves.
