Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I have just recently been diagnosed and am back at work first day back I took hypo (first one ) my work is very demanding and lucky if you get dinner break just wondering if I will still be able to work like this I love my job as I have always liked being really busy but feel it is too much at the moment. I know it will settle down through time but dont know if I can manage.

Hi there pam.

Like yourself i was not long diagnosed diabetic , I was worrying if i told work they make freak out but actually when i sat down with my boss she was very understanding she knows what she got to look out for and i have explained to her that she may have to be patcient with me if anything happens at work she said she would never be insensitive and make me carry on working she would always take me home/hospital/gp's/ , Last week i wasnt feeling to good and today i was off as well she was fine but im only part time , is they no way you could speak to the boss and maybe think about shorter hours ? what do you actually work as ?

I work as an assistant manager in a large homewares store. My boss is great her son is diabetic its the ones above her I am not sure of. and also my energy levels just now are very low. I was in line for a store of my own but have heard through the grapevine that they have chosen someone else. Unfortunately I have only work for about six months for them and it is the first store of its kind in scotland although they are opening more so the pressure is on to do well. I feel that because of my diagnosis they will think I am not able to do the job and to be honest at the moment I am finding it hard. :(

yup i know exactly how you feel i was in 2 minds whether to even tell my boss as i thought she may have judged me and deemed me unable to work to the best of my ability of course i had to tell them otherwise that would of been very silly .. Is they anybody there you can sit and talk your concerns through with i mean you say the lady there has a son that is diabetic that must be of great help to you in a way as she has expereince in her life of the illness , if she was to listen to you and then squash any of your worries im sure that would be a weight off your shoulders I know i woild talk to some one because you dont want added stress as well as having to cope with the diagnosis of diabetes. As the for the people higher if they are worth there salt they should relaise we aint all going keel over we can still be perfectly capable of managing our jobs and our diabetes..

Pam I think its something you will establish over time with your work place as to how the respond to you and your diagnosis. I have a couple of problems still over the years and I thought about taking them further, afterall the law is apparently on our side with the disiability discrimination act, but I changed mind for fear of rocking the boat. Time will tell. We do have rights though. I have never purchased/ordered it, but I know Diabetes UK have a booklet information on Management of Diabetes in the workplace. Check their website. I hope things pan out ok.

seconded on what sugar said , it is out of order for any workplace to make some one feel less adequate just because of an illness, altho it does go on and some bosses can be very unprofessional about it
anyway good luck pam and im sure like sugar said overtime your workplace will know how to respond .

Hi Pam
Congratulations on your first day back at work. As you say, things will get easier. It's particularly tough in early days of Type 1 diagnosis, as there's so much to learn about getting balance of insulin, food and activity etc right - and your pancreas may be having a honeymoon phase which means it irregularly decides to have a last gasp and issue some insulin, irrespective of what you've injected. Not sure how much physical activity you're doing as a manager in a hardwear store, but if you need to move things or walk long distances, then make sure you have some sweets or glucose tablets in you pocket (actually, have them to hand whatever you're doing), so that you can have a couple before doing activity and if you feel yourself going hypoglycaemic. When newly diagnosed, you may feel hypoglycaemic when actually at normal levels, as your body has got used to higher levels - but this will ease gradually. If in doubt, treat as hypoglycaemia by eating something.
Not an easy employment situation for anyone just now...

Thanks to all for their kinds words and thoughts on this subject having you all here is a great comfort knowing that anything I am unsure of or just wanting a rant ( which I often feel like at the moment ) I can come on here and ask> seen the dietician today and feel overwhelmed at all the do's and dont's but as you all say I will get there in time 🙂

no probs hun , you will always get the best help and advice from some one in here x

Pam I posted a similar post a few weeks back. It really all can get too much sometimes! The best advice I've been given though is just to take it all slowly (the diabetes, I know work won't wait!!), try one thing at a time and don't expect miracles. It will get better. Over the last couple of weeks I feel like it's improved so much for me just by asking for help and advice as I've needed it - it's a lot to take in and it really can be overwhelming. There are so many people on this forum willing to help 🙂

HI

Ive just returned to work after recently being diagnosed and my work have been fantastic to say the least. I have had my breaks re arranged and Im getting a room set aside for me to give myself my injections. Also had been worrying about my attendance but manager told me my health comes first before anything

The day I went back was thrown in at the deep in as deal with escalations ie complaints for the business and you know something I really loved that challenge again

Getting trained up further in maternity/adoption/ paternity leave so can train others and I cant wait

So I understnad totally how you feel but guess Ive been really lucky

WOW sounds like my boss she is very good , i work in a kitchen it can get very hectic and very difficult with all the lovely food i deal with ha , but like you said about your boss saying you're health comes first he/she is totally right , the setting a side of a room for you is totally fantastic i like that , its nice to here of bosses that are understanding for once some can not be so

glad all is going well with work xx
