NIGEL Lawson, Margaret Thatcher's Chancellor of the Exchequer, called it our 'national religion', and Danny Boyle made it the focal point of the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony.

Yet as the NHS celebrates its 66th birthday, there can be little doubt that the institution is feeling as beleaguered as it is still beloved.

Accident and emergency wards are overflowing, with the 95 per cent four-hour waiting target having been missed every week for almost a year. And we know the picture at UHNS is particularly acute.

Social care budgets have been cut by up to 26 per cent in some areas, with Stoke-on-Trent City Council being among the hardest hit.
