Hello all,

I was diagnosed Type 2 two years ago when in hospital for something else, and haven't really addressed weight/diet/mindset seriously in that time since. I've started looking on here again after a rough appointment with my diabetic nurse, and I'm starting to make some changes.

Currently on Metformin SR 2g/day. Weight 112kg, height 6'3", so I need to lose quite a bit. Since getting my act together again I'm testing every day, as a minimum first thing in the morning but at other times as well if I can. I have a desk job and don't exercise much, which again I'm trying to change and get on the right path.

I've started using myfitnesspal for logging all food, synced with a Fitbit for logging steps and Mapmyride for logging bike rides. Those apps do seem to have a 'social feed' side to them as well as just logging, so it would be good to have some 'friends' on there who are in a similar boat. (As an aside, I think myfitnesspal is amazing for a freebie and I can see it helping me loads).

This forum seems really friendly so I'm planning on pulling up a chair and sticking around for a while, even if I don't post much.

Hi Nick and welcome! I don't use much in the way of logging activity or diet and just stick to recording my BS results on a spreadsheet and avoiding high carb foods. I did however try Mapmyride on my Android phone and had some problems with it so now use Strava which I've found pretty good. I've problems walking but have now got an e-bike and have found it great and Strava helps me keep a track of mileage and my own presonal 'records' which I keep trying to push up. I did just under 17 miles on Friday half of which was some serious hill climbing and find that cycling does help to reduce my BG.

Welcome to the forum nickinwarwick. There are some great apps to help improve diet and exercise. Glad you've found things to support your efforts. As you say, the social side is very important. Personally, I enjoy parkrun and logging cycling for specific schemes such as Cycle to Work in September.

Hi guys, thanks for the welcome.

Dave - yes I think Strava seems to be the go-to app for ride logging, so much so that it seems to have become a verb (to strava a ride) in the same way as Google has. But.. I had got setup with Mapmyride before discovering that Strava was free. I might yet change over though.

It sounds like you're a lot more serious (and fitter!) than me, so I'm only doing short rides of half an hour to an hour. But it's a start.

Copepod - yes and the level of capability even from the free versions of apps like myfitnesspal is impressive. Of course it means nothing unless you stick at it but I'm on an 11 day streak on myfitnesspal now 🙂 Slightly obsessed!

Blood sugar goes into the Apple Health app but I keep a spreadsheet as well.

Hi Nick and welcome to the forum. 🙂 I use Strava as well. I don't log rides with the Strava app on my phone (due to battery drain and the fact I may need my phone in an emergency!) but use a Garmin which uses Garmin connect (although I never look at Garmin connect) that automatically syncs with Strava. Good luck and keep at it!

My rides aren't yet long enough to worry about battery drain!!

Thanks for the welcome.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum.🙂

Nick, what I like about Strava and I guess Mapmyride is much the same is that it encourges me to try to improve on my attainment. I guess its a bit like recording blood glucose levels and trying to improve the readings. Both give me targets and even the smallest improvements are steps in the right direction.
I did 16.7 miles in 1hr 23 mins a couple of days ago and much of the route involved some pretty hard climbing.
Not bad for a septuagenarian!
