Relationship to Diabetes
Hello All,

I'm writing this post from the hospital canteen. My fiance is on the mend from his 13th DKA. I'm looking for some support and to make friends who understand tha t it's not "he didn't take his medication" "did he eat too much cake".

Feeling very lonely at the moment.

Hi Marshmallow, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about the circumstances that brought you here though :( Has he been diagnosed long? Do you know what insulin regime he is on - pump, injections? If injections, how many times a day? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get a picture of the situation you both find yourselves in. If this is his 13th admission, over what sort of timescale?

You'll find lots of friendly, helpful people here with all sorts of experience, so please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we'll do our best to help 🙂

HI northerner.
Mike and I have been together 3 years it is the 13th DKA. In that time. (I believe he had 2-3 before we got together)

He is on Novorapid 4-6 times a day and 40 units lantus. Both pre filled pens.

He has developed Gastroparesis as a kick in the teeth from his T1.

Please ask any more questions

Goodness, that is really awful, poor bloke :( DKA is caused by insufficient insulin circulating - is there any pattern to how it develops for him? A simple virus can mean that insulin requirements go through the roof, and you can quickly find yourself in a bad situation. You might want to take note of the following link - perhaps print it out so you always have it to hand, I found it very useful when I was in danger of DKA during a very bad illness when I was unable to drink or eat without being sick - ketones were up to 6.4 😱

Has he ever been on a diabetes education course to learn how to manage his condition? I'm not criticising his knowledge, but clearly something is going badly wrong for all these episodes of DKA to be occurring. DAFNE (Doses Adjusted for Normal Eating) is the most well-known course, but there are others available. If he hasn't been on a course he should ask what is available in your area. I imagine the gastroparesis is not helping at all, as it can make digestion and blood sugar levels very unpredictable :(
 
Yes he's done DAFNE he's due on the new Katie course next month. They believe the DKA are linked to his GP.

Does he only see a GP for his diabetes care then? He really ought to be seen at a consultant-led clinic, with access to fully-qualified DSNs (Diabetes Specialist Nurses) - particularly given the repeated problems he is having, coupled with the problems of gastroparesis. He should ask for a referral.
 
Does GP mean General Practitioner or GastroPararesis?
Katie course is new to me. What does it cover? Geographical area? Aspects of diabetes?
 
Sorry GP is Gastroparesis. He is under endo and SDN

He is in the right place and good to see the medics are treating him appropriately. Hope he can go home soon to recover from his ordeal, thoughts are with you both {{{hugs}}} take care x
