INDORE: The insulin pump, a diabetes treatment device that promises to give insulin-dependent diabetics, a life free from insulin injections, is finding few takers.

The reason being, "Each pump costs as much as a small car (anywhere between Rs 2 and 3 lakh)," say doctors. Launched more than a decade ago, cost of the pump is a hindrance to its acceptability and it is still controversial as not everybody manages to use it wisely.

According to city doctors, only 5% of total population of type-1 diabetics and nearly 2% of type-2 diabetics use insulin pumps.

They always seem to miss the point that, although you don't need to inject you still need to test and you still need to insert canulas every couple of days or so. The main benefit of a pump (as far as I can see) is its flexibility in delivering insulin.
