Hi there, thank you for letting me join…
Feeling quite scared and vulnerable tonight.
I’ve been Pre diabetic and lost weight , increased excercise etc but still not able to reduce my blood sugars.
Been told tonight that I have to start on Metformin 3x day and also Glucazide!!
So so worried about the side affects of this medication
Any advice please xx

Welcome @Salmepal 🙂 Please don’t be scared. You’re not alone here. Try to think of this positively. The new meds should help your blood sugar control. Many people here take Metformin so will have advice about it, and a number take Gliclazide.

You must have jumped up from being prediabetic to over the diagnostic threshold of 48mmol/mol to quite a high level for your HbA1C result to have been prescribed both those medications. Were you told what that was.
When you were prediabetic did you make any dietary changes that had no impact. You may have had either a misunderstanding about the importance of reducing carbohydrates or you just had bad or no advice.
If you are going to start on metformin then you should start gradually with just 1 tablet and build up to 3 to allow the body to adjust and minimise any stomach issues.
What would a typical days food be for you as that may be where you can help to get your blood glucose down.

Welcome to the forum @Salmepal

Your worries and concerns are perfectly understandable - but try not to let them overtake you.

Medication is just another tool in your kitbag which can help you manage your glucose levels for a while. We have lots of folks here whose metabolisms need a bit of a helping hand with medications to help with their diabetes management (including all our T1s!). We have some T2s who were on meds, but have come back off them. And others who could come off, but prefer to stay on!

Of the meds you have been offered, the vast majority of members are able to take them without significant side effects. Some have a little stomach upset to start with, but that usually resolves over time, or can be helped by slow release formulation.

Metformin works in the background, but helping to reduce glucose output from the liver, and helping to reduce insulin resistance.

Gliclazide works more directly by encouraging the pancreas to produce extra insulin.

It’s important to balance meds with the right amount of carbohydrate intake - this varies from person to person, but finding the right sources of carbs and the right daily intake (not too much and not too little) will help your meds keep your BG levels in range.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂
