Haven't eaten since yesterday evening due to nausea and lack of appetite. Despite this my BGs keep rising. I'm pumping more than twice as much insulin as I usually need into me but despite this BGs keep rising until I have another bolus which doesn't work as well as it should. Have phoned NHS Direct who have said out of hours GP will call me within an hour. Really don't feel well enough to go to the surgery but not sure what else to do. I haven't got any ketones

Hi Amanda,

What are you your levels? What TBR are you on? 🙂Bev

Hi Bev ive managed to get it down to 6 (I was surprised when I just tested) but that is with a total of 11 bolus over the day when I haven't eaten anything and a TBR of 200% for most of the day. Im really worried abou what will happen when I go to bed tonight

Hi Amanda,

When you say bolus do you mean corrections? You said you werent eating? Dont worry about how much insulin your having - you need what you need. You do know that you can create another pattern dont you? So if 200% isnt enough you can do another pattern using the figures from 200% and then add on to that so start with 150% and take it from there. As long as you are testing every few hours you will be fine - but I know it is worrying using TBR's.🙂Bev

Thanks Bev for reassuring me the 11 units were corrections spread over the day. I guess I'm probably panicking too much. I will put the TBR down to 150 when I go to bed and test at midnight and 3am to correct if necessary. Fortunately, touch wood, I have good hypo awareness when I sleep

Hi Amanda,

Just to reassure you some more - this is what we do when Alex is unwell - lots of corrections and high TBR's - so please dont worry. You are doing great and being 6mmols and ill is just great so well done! I hope you feel better tomorrow.🙂Bev

Hi Amanda, I can't add to what bev has said, just wanted to say I hope you have a peaceful night and feel much better in the morning 🙂

Hi Bev

Thank you for leeting me know. That this is what you do with Alex. On MDI I would never have dreamed of doubling my basal or 11 units of corrections. I guess that this is why it is so scary

Amanda

Thank you Alan at least this is helping me to lose weight🙄

Hi Amanda, just to add that I sympathise - I've got a similar sounding bug at the mo, & was up last night with a stupidly high level groggily trying to work out whether the cannula had failed, I'd messed up my tea time carb count big time or whether it was the bug! 🙄 Not the best fun. TBRs can be a bit nerve wracking at first but I do love the fact that you can wash out the effect relatively quickly once you're on the mend - it's a flex I never had with injections, so a bonus! 🙂

Fingers crossed we both sleep well & wake up feeling better tomorrow! 🙂

Hi Amanda,

Yes that is what we found scary to begin with - lots more basal than we ever had on MDI - it felt so alien doing that but when you think about it - the basal on a pump is quite different from the basal on MDI - so changing how you think about it will go a long way to encouraging you to be brave and use TBR's - but you are doing very well indeed - so pat yourself on the back and put this down to yet another experience on using your pump!🙂Bev

Hi Twitchy I feel sorry for you that you are feeling ill and having problems but if we are both in the same situation then this suggests that it is a stupid bug and nothing that we have done wrong or some new illness that we've developed. Lots of sympathy to you, i really hope that you sleep well and feel better in the morning.

Bev thank you for the pat on the back - I feel like I am on the intensive course with the pump🙂. But it is good learning.

It may be early but I'm going to bed now with my alarms set good night

Hello. You are doing exactly what I do when not well. I have set another br, on my pump, for when I am not well. Just keep testing. I hope you feel much better tomorrow.

Hi Amanda I'm thinking of you and I hope you start to feel much better very soon. Take care with a (((((((((hug)))))))))) x

Thank you everyone. 2.6 at 3 an so put the basal on normal but 3.2 at 8 am. Still feel very nauseous and no appetite. Just weighed myself and the weight is dropping off, weigh the lowest I have in a long time and that's without trying.

Quite a roller coaster :( Are you keeping well-hydrated? Hope things improve as the day goes on Amanda, you really are going through all the main chapters on pump control at a rapid rate! But you should be very proud of yourself. I think that your previous dedication to achieve the best control you could on injections has stood you in good stead when learning how to make adjustments with the pump - I'm sure many people would have been floundering with some of the things you are already on the road to mastering 🙂

Hope you're feeling better soon. Xx

Thank you Alan for your lovely message. That is really nice of you. I've just checked my average BG and despite being ill all week it is 9.9 for the past 7 days - which I'm really pleased with as I was averaging 9.8 plus on injections when I was well. Even better the average BG since I started on the pump is 8.8. I still feel very nauseous but managed a Susie walk and even better now feel very confident in using my bump to deal with my erratic blood sugars.....and I've lost weight🙂. Maybe I should market this as a pre-Christmas diet🙄 I've obviously got my sense of humour back
