Feeling poorly and using a new flow chart for sick day rules

The dreaded league has got me, so I have no energy and I am basically sleeping through most of the day.

I am finding my levels are in the low teens for a lot of the time but no evidence so far of ketones, so staying in the automated system with closed loop so far. This is the worst I have felt since looping. The system coped last time with a minor cold, but not sure that it will with this one.

My understanding is that I can stay in automated mode providing the ketones stay away. I am surprised that haveing spent the last four hours just above 10 I still have none. My upper target for alerts is 14 and I have gone up there a few times today but still no ketones. Glad to have the blood ketone strips now rather than relying on the urine strips.
I am going to rely on the algorithm which will wake me if I am above 14 for over three hours, and hope that I can get some sleep. Being ill is definietly not the time when I want to have to start thinking about diabetes more but if necessary I will go back into manual mode and start with stronger corrections.

The algorithm definitely works well for me in normal circumstances but not in extremes.

Sorry to hear you are so poorly at the moment @SB2015. I do hope you're feeling more yourself again very soon. How did the night go for you? :care:

So sorry to hear you’re ill @SB2015 I hope you can shake it off quickly. There are some nasty bugs going round. Is it a sickness bug? I find they’re the worse for ketones. If it’s ‘only’ the cold/fluey virus thing (still fighting that one off) then hopefully you’ll be ok.

Wishing you a speedy recovery x

Sending get well wishes your way Sue. Hope you are better soon and that Hermione can figure out how to battle the high levels for you.

All good so far and just the cough, snotty and feverish. Only 50% TIR but (not a surprise) but no ketones so would rather let the system deal with it rather than give myself more to think about.

It will be a different Christmas tomorrow, as we were to join friends with 20 at the table. Not planning to share this with them so another day of rest instead and a quiet supper instead if I feel like eating. We will celebrate together another time.

After another PJ Day today and I am now hoping to get some fresh air tomorrow having not ventured out since Sunday. With HCL I have been sat around 50/60% TIR which I would find difficult to accept normally, but in the light of how poorly I have felt I think it is as good as I would have done in manual and at least I have people been able to focus on sleeping rather than testing and making decisions.

I still find it so useful to have a flowchart to follow to help with decision making. Always good to have a sick day rules chart on hand. This new one is specifically for HCL and advises when to switch back to manual.

Definitely turned a corner now but this cough is persistent and lingering. Looking forward to feeling a lot better and hoping to be able to celebrate new year with family and friends.

I've been rough as anything since yesterday (not the best timing!) and have significantly increased my insulin dosage over the last 2 days (following the sick-day rules) - have got a throat like someone has slashed it with a razor blade so will be going to Pharmacy tomorrow (they can see you for this now apparently (and prescribe if necessary), rather than waiting for a docs appointment) - BG has not been less than 9.5 at all and spiked at 18 last night, which is very unusual for me as my control is usually very good) - Glad you are turning the corner @SB2015 - get well soon

I know that I am on the mend now, and my pump has noticed and I woke this morning back to 90% TIR.
Being out of range makes me feel yuk physically anyway, so nice to have the bonus of better levels. Time for some fresh air.

I hope you start to feel a lot better soon @mashedupmatt

Glad you are feeling better @SB2015. I'd not trust my version of the HCR to deal with illness.

As I was at home I decided to try this and avoided interfering and kept a close watch on ketones. I did spend quite a bit of time between 10-12, and the system seemed to find it hard to get me back to my target, but then so do I when I am I’ll and in manual mode. For the additional rest I got by trusting the system I think that it was worth it.

I entered my normal carbs rather than adding some to give additional bolus. Not sure whether I would add some in next time, just as I would increase the bolus in manual. This might have helped bring levels down a bit but then I wasn’t eating much.

My nurse recently shared this with me, is this what you mean? the sick day rules are on page 3, I haven't needed this yet.

Glad you are on the mend @SB2015

Hope you feel better @mashedupmatt

Thanks @PhoebeC . That is the flowchart we were given at my last training.

Good that we now have access to blood ketone tests. Made me feel more confident about trusting the HCL to deal with my illness and allowing me to get a lot more rest.

I definitely like a clear flowchart. Takes away a lot of thinking. I hope you are getting your pods sorted. It sounds like you have had a few teething problems

How are you feeling now @SB2015 ? A relative has had a similar illness and just tested positive for influenza A. Apparently, the flu vaccination isn’t that effective this year. Her symptoms were fever, cough and aching but it’s dragged on and on and she seems to have spent a lot of time in bed. The interesting thing she said was that you can buy flu tests OTC. I didn’t know this. Not that they would make flu better, but it would be good to know what you had, i think.

I had flu once @Inka and this is definitely not flu. We both had it together one Christmas and couldn’t do anything. Interesting that there seems to be loads who have had flu in spite of the jab.

We have just had the irritating and lingering cough/cold/fever which seems to be doing the rounds. We are both up and about now and just irritating others with our coughing and expecting it to go on for at least another week. Still not much voice but it will all get better.

That’s a relief @SB2015 Although the cough does sound unpleasant. There seems to have been a huge amount of viruses round this Autumn/Winter. Covid, of course, but also a variety of nasty cold and cough viruses. We’ve had so many people off work.

My main point above was about the flu tests. Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t realise those were available. Reassuring to know you don’t have flu. Yes, it’s being said that the flu vaccine is only 35 or 40% effective this year. Better than nothing, of course. Now, if only they could find a vaccine for coughs and colds - or preferably eradicate them totally!

Happy New Year @SB2015, hope your voice has returned and you're back to your usual self now. :thankyou:

Thanks @Anna DUK . Still coughing but feeling a lot better, enough voice now that I will venture out to our first rehearsal on Thursday.

It's the cough which always lingers doesn't it. Glad you're feeling a lot better than before. :care:

Or, as my father used to say: "It's not the cough that carries you off, it's the coffin they carry you off in".
