Hi all
Diagnosed T2 3 weeks today and put on metformin 2000mg and told no need to test.
Now I've reached the max dose side-effects have arrived - how long before my gut stops churning?
How can I tell how well I'm doing when told no need to test????

Hello, and welcome. The Metformin you have been prescribed has familiar effects, with "discomfort", etc. which for me lasted a few days on half the initial amount, raised to the full dosage a week later, with exactly the same effects, but which then subsided after another three days. Others have had much more prolonged effects, persisting longer. And I am an advocate of testing, particularly from initial diagnosis until you find what works for you. Sadly, there is still a persisting and disconcerting level of ignorance amongst healthcare professionals. I know I am not alone in finding this forum a far more reliable source of information and advice.

Welcome to the group, Minion....

Sadly, in the UK, the medical system appears to be against self testing, instead relying on the HbA1c test to measure progress. IMHO for daily management self-testing is vital & the only option appears to be self-funding. Many of out members opt for the SD Codefree from amazon as the test strips are relatively cheap.

I was on Metformin for five weeks and got very bad side effects, I was taking a statin as well, but I was so ill.
I bought a meter, kept my levels low and have been in normal ranges for 6 months. If I'd taken the advice given I'd have got nowhere.
My doctor has not spoken to me since diagnosis, I have done so well I think he's sulking. I rarely need to test now, as I seem to be able to eat more carbs - but I try not to as I want to lose weight and low carb was the only way I could do it.
