hi all, I am newly prescribed zicron tablets to lower blood sugar. I find that I am constantly feeling sick. Has anyone else found this with these tablets? I’m not sure if it’s related or not....

Hi Aline, sorry to hear you are feeling unwell :( Zicron is a brand name for gliclizide, and the patient information leaflet (PIL) does cite nausea as a common side effect, unfortunately:

I haven't been on this myself, but I know we have a lot of members who have so hopefully they will be able to share their experiences and the side effects wear off shortly 🙂 Are you measuring your blood sugar levels when you feel particularly bad? It's important when you are on a mdeication of this type that you test your blood sugar levels, particularly before you drive, to make sure you are not dropping too low. Always make sure you have easy access to some fast-acting sugar, like a jelly baby or two, so you can treat anything below 4.0 mmol/l 🙂

thank you, ive got some protein bars but jelly babies sound better 🙂

Hi, I take gliclizide and felt nauseous for a few weeks when I started it.

Ah thank you. I’m really looking forward to feeling better, hope I get used to it soon.

If you have a low blood sugar then you need something sweet and fast-acting, a protein bar wouldn't be fast enough, probably. Jelly babies, fruit pastilles, glucose tablets - just one or two - will do the job 🙂 I've always found it funny that jelly babies are effectively medicine! 🙂 Unfortunately, you can't get them on prescription 😉

I always carry a packet of fruit pastilles with me, jelly babies are dangerous!

I'm on a daily cocktail of 10 tablets but have just come off of gliclizide (now on insulin) but as I remember the first few weeks on it did give me a sickly feeling. Unfortunately there is a potential for any medication to have side effects and you have to weigh up the positives/negatives for each medication. Your GP may be able to put you on an alternative treatment if you feel the nausea is prolonged but I would say they have initially chosen the one that is most suitable given your particular circumstances..

Taking the zicron with food may help, the nausea may be as a result of your body reacting to lower BG (which it's not used to).... I certainly felt a little wobbly when I was first on Glyburide which is a similar medication.

Hi when I was first prescribed Gliclizide (4x80mg) tablets a day I felt awful! Felt constantly sick and had a horrible tingling sensation in my hands, feet and face. I am now on 2 Gliclizide tablets daily and have been told they i will be coming off them altogether within the next week and I can't wait! The above symptoms aren't as bad now as they were but are still there even though my bloods are much better controlled since I have been on insulin.
I hope you are soon feeling better
