Fatty Liver?

As has been said, a raised ALT is not diagnostic of a fatty liver. It’s also true to say that the liver is perfectly capable of putting itself right. Find the cause, and stop it is the usual rule.

Both Clopidogrel and Famotidine can affect liver function, but it’s not one of the common side effects of either, but they are the prime suspects.

And if you had significant liver disease, or a fatty liver, your ALT level would be a sight higher than 85.
Thank you so much for this reply. I don't know which drug is the culprit but I suspect it is one of them.

Well some of my blood results are back and although I don't have a clue what they mean they are normal.
They are immunoglobins, IgA, IgM, serum A1 antitrypsin and serum ferritin.

I am glad they are normal but like I say I don't understand what they mean! (Apart from Serum Ferritin)

Hepatitis is NA on patient access so I will assume that is ok unless told otherwise for the moment.

No news on the scan date as yet.

if it come back as normal that is good Flutterby. when i was younger i came down with Hep A it made me so poorly and the vomiting was terrible.

I spoke to a GP today. They think I have Primary billiary cirrhosis. They did an auto immune profile and from the results they consider this highly likely. I still have to have the ultrasound yet and possibly need a liver biopsy. I am very upset and shocked. Its only 5 months since my latest stroke. I am still trying to regain the level of mobility I had before... Now I have this to deal with. I haven't told my family yet so for anyone on Facebook lets just keep this on here. Does anyone else have this or know much about it? I cannot understand how 6 months ago all my liver results were fine and suddenly I have this potential diagnosis.

Have to say Karen that I'm shocked too. BUT - they've found it PDQ and that is always the first hurdle with anything. Hopefully getting the ultrasound won't take very long at all - Pete's just had to have a number of tests for a possible bladder issue including an ultrasound which happened within 8 days of him reporting a prob to the GP - the doc prescribed ABs for a suspected UTI which he'd just taken the last one of on Day 5 - and the first he knew was the hospital ringing him to arrange a time and date with him - since then in the last 10 days he's had a Covid test followed by the ultrasound scan, then a cystoscopy, then a kidney function blood test and yesterday a CT scan (with dye) on his kidneys as the ultrasound found an unsuspected cyst on one of his kidneys so they need to rule out the big C.

Still as yet heard a total of absolutely nothing from the GP surgery about any of this.

Hope you have similar success!

As I said last night Karen I’m here for you anytime you need me xxx

I hope Pete gets good results. My GPs have been silent about the stroke. Yesterday I told them they had to hear me on all of these issues. To be fair she listened. xx

Jenny I so that it isn’t cancer and can be easily treated xx

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't posted for ages. Life has been really difficult and I am totally exhausted emotionally. This year has been one thing after another and all that on top of the stroke last October.

Anyway I thought I would bring you up to date on what is going on with my liver.

I have had numerous scans, blood tests and consultations at the QE in Birmingham. My liver function tests spiked initially but have since shown a gradual return to normal levels, much to the confusion of the consultant who says I am an "interesting case".

Most recently I had an MRI which was of the whole abdominal area but with particular focus on the bile ducts. PBC affects the bile ducts and so that is why these results will be of particular interest to my consultant. I have a telephone conversation with her on Saturday at 3.45pm.

I have had no treatment as yet because the diagnosis is still unclear but during the last telephone conversation she said that it is still a possibility that the clopidogrel or some other "toxin" caused the abnormal LFT results. The big question is whether my AMA result has returned to normal. These are antibodies that attack the body (specifically bile ducts). The consultant raised the possibility that the original result could have also been triggered by the "toxin". I don't know if these can return to normal but she has repeated the test so she must think it is possible. The fact that my AST/ALT and GGT results are now normal is reassuring, bilirubin also normal as is another enzyme that is raised in PBC.

She laughed at my GP's thoughts originally of fatty liver and the scan disproved that theory.

So, I feel I am at a crossroads, what is said on Saturday feels hugely significant and I will let you know. I am really hoping that everything will be ok but aware that it might not be. If my bile ducts are fine then that will be a huge relief. My diabetic control has been adversely affected by the stress of this and other things which has happened but I feel if I get a reprieve with the liver condition I can get that back under control again.

Thoughts, prayers and crossed fingers appreciated for Saturday.

I really hope it’s good news on Saturday @Flutterby - it sounds like you deserve a break! 🙂

Thank you. The nerves are kicking in but I spoke via a Facebook live Q&A session yesterday to a professor who is a specialist. He said mine was an Atypical presentation for PBC and also said AMA antibodies can be triggered and later disappear. I am cautiously hopeful.

You haven’t got PBC if you have a normal set of liver function tests. I have to admit to a marginal smug feeling that the consultant opined that it could have been the drugs you were on. If you fell perfectly well, or at least back to the new normal, then there is no need to be cautious about feeling hopeful.

I think it’s quite appalling the some doctors have made wild guesses (not based on clinical signs, symptoms or blood tests) that have made you worry so. It would me.

And when doctors talk about “atypical” and “interesting” that means they don’t know, specially as your blood tests are now normal, but they don’t realise that such comments add to worry.

Thank you for this. I agree with your verdict. I never had the classic markers for PBC apart from a positive AMA result. If it hadn't been for the PBC foundation I would have felt like giving up. I am hoping for a clean bill of health regards this so that I can focus on living my life again.
