Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am newly diagnosed type 2 (2 weeks) and finding it really difficult coping with the sudden fatigue. I check my bs readings and theyre usually fine 8 - 10. Waiting on blood results for thyroid. Anyone else have this and any advice would be great.

Hi @Jannovs and welcome

When do you check your BG? If that is a waking number (close to fasting) then they are a bit high. Do you know what your HbA1c was diagnosis? This would be a number of 48 or above although could have been into three figures. Are you on medication? Sorry for all the questions but it will help people tailor their responses to your situation

Hi @Jannovs

Adrian’s asked some key questions but if you’ve got anything to ask at all regarding the diabetes then ask away 🙂

Ive not had my HbA1c yet (said i would get it after 3 months)but i know i was really high when i was diagnosed. 19.3. I am on Metformin morning and evening (after meals)

I get tireless all the time every day blood sugars are between 10 and 23 at the moment.I fall asleep a few times a day.

Are you saying you were diagnosed with a one off blood glucose and no HBA1C?

Are you taking a medication, as it would otherwise seem a coincidence to only have symptoms after being diagnose and could be related to something else. If you say what you are taking or doing to bring your levels down then others may be able to say whether they also experienced fatigue from the same.

And you should not be diagnosed from a single glucose reading, which is what 19.3 mmol/mol would be, as that could be temporary and have many different causes. It is like being covered in spots after painting, it could be an infection but you first need to know if you still have them after taking a bath!

So an HbA1c test is the standard way of diagnosing diabetes, as it gives an average over approximately the past three months. That is why you then have to wait that long again before another one, as that will then show the effects of any interventions made, such as medication, diet, and exercise.

Were you told of your diagnosis by your GP?

How did they arrive at the diagnosis if they’re not done an HbA1C?

I’d call the surgery and ask for an appointment with the Diabetes Nurse and also for bloods to be taken for an HbA1C.

Thyroid problems can make you tired my partner was diagnosed with this
and he was always sleeping and didn't want to do anything when he was
given the correct medication he is now fine, so its good they are being
checked

Thyroid problems don't bring on sudden fatigue as described by @Jannovs. High BGs are far more likely.

Fatigue was my reason for going to the doctor initially.
It improved when I got my BG under control.
But it's a gradual thing, not a rush to get it down.
