Hi, I have just been diagnosed with type 2 (13.7%) and have three months to diet to reduce my sugar levels before I am tested again. I am following the low carb low sugar diet which recommends occasional fasting (no breakfast) and only eating two meals a day. Does anyone know how often I would need to do this each week in order to sufficiently lower my sugar levels (to get to 6.5) in three months?

Hi @LSS62 I just wanted to say hello and welcome to the forums here. I'm still a relative newcomer here (newbie) so I can't really give you any sound advice. The good news is that you've come to the right place for the best advice possible from people who have been there, done it and succeeded. So hold on a moment and I'm sure there'll be loads of replies to your question, all of them containing great sound advice.

Hi and welcome,

I have never seen a diet which included fasting, advocated for the treatment of diabetes. It would be totally unsuitable for type 1 and difficult to see how such a diet could be used for a type 11 on any kind of medication.

If you were to follow a mote conventional low carbo diet there is plenty of help available on this site.

I can only suggest that you go back to whoever suggested this diet and ask them the questions that you asked here.

I can’t answer your specific question as to how many times a week but I improved my hba1c in three months by doing a low carb/high fat eating plan and intermittent fasting.
IF and LCHF go hand-in-hand....the fat and protein keep you fuller for longer therefore making the fasting easier. I IF for between 18 and, occasionally, up to 24 hours. I’ll fast particularly when I know I’ve got a busy day as the time goes quicker and makes it easier. I never have breakfast now so I IF every day as I’ll eat at the earliest round about 12-1ish or later and incorporate long fasts when I feel like it. IF brings my blood sugar readings right down so I’m a great advocate.

There is a very good site diet doctor.

There are a series of videos by Dr. Jason Fung that you can watch. I think that is for members only but you can have a free month's trial as long as you cancel membership before the month is up.

I eat twice a day, morning and evening as that seems to work well for me.
I don't get hungry so don't bother with lunch.
I was back to normal Hba1c at 6 months from diagnosis.

Lots of info on YouTube. As already mentioned, Dr Jason Fung and The Diet Doctor are good. I also like Dr Nick Zyrowski, Dr Eric Berg and Dr Sten Ekberg. Dr Zoe Harcombe, too.

IF (Intermittent Fasting) is part of my D management & has been for a couple of years now, in fact since I went Low Carb. My FBG is typically in the mid-4 to mid 5 range (unless I've been off the reservation). A1c was a little up last time... 5.7 but the last 2 times was 5.3.... Another test due in a month & I'm confident it'll be in the normal range.

As stated there is plenty of material on IF & it is gaining acceptance.

Hi
following low carb is so useful for reducing sugar
Depends on which type of fasting you do , how often can you manage
But even without fasting eating three meals a day with low carb should have very good affect.
The point is to leave yourself hungery for hours could help improving the resistance of Ansulin
Just try and see , sometimes three months not enough to have good effect
Normally they test after six month
Don’t worry a lot , just increase veg , reduce carb and do exercise
Can I know how much is your HBA1C

Myself
Diagnosed prediabetic with HBA1C. 42 on May 2018
after losing around 20 kg
HBA1C May 2019. HBA1C become 45 !!!!!!
After following low carb and IF
Yesterday got my result 38
So go back to normal
I do 6/18. IF daily except weekend and feel very good and happy now
Eating low carb food , not really high fat as I am scared start to have high cholesterol
But eating two eggs daily
Low carb toast. Burgin
Nuts
Fish and meat
Pulses but not a lot
Lots of water more than 3 liter helped a lot with fasting , give you feel of full always
Don’t worry you will be able to win this battle if you yourself wants that
As for me doctor advised me to leave that new diet when he noticed the rise and just said enjoy life and later you can get medication while I didn’t want to lose the battle at all and didn’t like his advise but he said one word which was “ all about hunger “ when I started to search and read a lot
Dr Fung was so useful
This page is so useful to give you idea what to eat
I am enjoying my meal now more than before
Wearing size 10 while I was size 18
