Hope you can help.I have heard that fasting for a day or 2 is good for diabetics. I am Type 2 on Metformin and Sitagliptin and wondered whether anyone has any experience of doing this. Any comments would be most welcome.

You'd need to discuss with your GP to make sure there wouldn't be a problem with your medication regime 🙂

IANAD*, so I'd agree with Northerner - check with your GP first. If you can do it, though, it can work wonders. I lost over a stone in just a few months by doing a 5-2 type diet, and that was before I knew I was diabetic & therefore I was still eating the sugary carby stuff on my "5" days. Since modifying my diet to be more diabetes friendly, on the days I manage to fast, I lose loads of weight really quickly - 7lbs/3.2kgs in 5 days over New Year, I was having one evening meal as my only food all day, and that was low carb, high protein.

I’m doing Keto and IF. I’ve lost nearly a stone since the beginning of January. My blood sugars get as low as 4.5 at times so I’m really pleased. However, I’m getting confused now because when I do a 12 to, sometimes, 18 hour fast....just drinking water or black coffee, my levels rise into the 6s. Why would this be? Can anyone shed some light or does anyone have the same experience? Not sure whether to carry on or stop the IF. Thank you.

It’s probably your liver keeping things ticking over. Nowt wrong with 6s, anyway, so you’re doing just fine. Folk on here would sell their grans for levels like that🙂

Thanks, Mike! I feel so much better already with losing a bit of weight and following the Keto plan. Will carry on! 🙂
