Morning all 🙂
Been reading about using intermittent fasting in an attempt to naturally empty the sugar from our body (type2). and reduce both the amount of insulin and insulin resistance.
This would obviously be done with agreement from GP, perhaps suspension of any glucose lowering medication and careful blood sugars monitoring .
I wonder if any of the Type 2 people here do, or have used, fasting as part of their diet to try combat Type 2 and what are your experiences of it..?

I think we’ve had a few people who have used intermittent fasting from time to time.

It seems to work well for some people, so might be worth trying.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Martin,

Prior to my diagnosis, I was working with the IF diet by Robert Skinner for weight loss. He offers three option for IF, the best know being 5:2. I opted for the 16/8 option which is a daily fast where you eat within a eight hour period and fast for 16 hours. The author claims that you only have to do this three times a week to be effective. Personally, I can't manage the 5:2, although it seems to work for many people. The third option was two intense days over the weekend, which for me would feel more like a punishment! I also found it easy to skip breakfast but have a little cheat with my morning cuppa - couldn't get out the door to work with out it. I was eating normal food between 11am and 7pm, which was very manageable for me.

I stopped IF when I received my diagnosis because my bg levels were all over the place. Also, I decided to reduce carbs and was concerned about low bg readings. I hope to return to some for of IF next month, once I have a stable bg baseline. 16/8 might be too challenging, so I might alter it to 14/10. As your describe, the main objective is to give our systems a period of rest to recover and cleanse, however, if it brings on hypos it defeats the object, in my opinion.

I will proceed with caution and see how it goes...

Good luck🙂

Hi Martin.
On the Xpert course I attended recently, there was quite a bit of talk about intermittent fasting both as a means of weight loss and BG control. Two of my fellow attendees tried the "time restricted eating" version during the 6 week duration of the course and had weight loss and improved fingerprick readings. They did it by skipping breakfast, and eating lunch and evening meals within an 8 hour window. We nicknamed it the Dolly Parton diet (9to5) :D
I can't skip breakfast because I always wake up really hungry. However, in the last couple of weeks, I have tried skipping lunch on the 3 days a week that I don't work. I eat a big breakfast about 10am, then just have plenty of water and eat my evening meal earlier than normal at about 6pm. I've found my fingerprick readings have stayed about the same, but I have lost a couple of pounds in weight.
So, if you want to try it definitely give it a go, with the usual caveats about medication and medical advice!
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
