Hi. I have been pre diabetic for a while and I'm very overweight (18 St) and this morning had a fasting home test with a reading of 7.8. I am just wondering whether I should repeat before contacting the GP and/or test after food?

I'm feeling quite anxious as I've been planning to try to get on top of exercise and diet forever and have not done so so am annoyed with myself. Regardless of what happens next I would like to try and lose some weight and do some exercise. Is there a decent starting point in terms of number of carbs to stay under a day or some other basic principal that would help me get started.

Thanks

Although that is rather higher than you would like to see, just 1 reading doesn't really tell you much as the finger prick just tells you a moment in time and can be influences by a number of factors. The best thing is to get a up to date HbA1C test which will indicate your blood glucose level and tell you if you have slipped into the diabetic zone, a result over 47mmol/mol would give you that diagnosis and a starting point for putting into action some changes to your diet.
Many people find a low carb approach successful in both losing weight and reducing blood glucose and this link may help with finding a way forward with that. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ Low carb is suggested as being no more than 130g carbs not just sugars per day, it does not mean NO carbs.
There are other regimes outlined on the main DUK site that people also find works for them.
But finding where you are at by getting that test will help.

Welcome to the forum @Fizzalfie

Sorry to hear your BG readings have been making you feel anxious.

You are quite right about keeping an eye on total carbohydrate intake (not just ‘of which sugars’). Many here use less than 130g per day of total carbs as a starting point for a low carb approach.

There’s a meal plan on the DUK website that offers some suggestions

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂

Thank you both. I will make an appointment with the GP and have a look at reducing carbs to under the 130 mark as a starter.
