So I’ve had my second confirmatory blood test back which is that I have diabetes and there are no other causes. I’ve been testing my bloods for the past ten days to see how foods affect them. I’ve yet to see a fasting glucose below 10. I take this between 6 and 8 in the morning and it’s normally 10-12 hours since last eating. It’s generally after getting up for a wee but before anything else. Is this normal in a new to diabetes person? Is there anything that can help reduce fasting glucose or is it just a question of reducing levels across the day?

To be honest, bringing it down from that high in 4 weeks is probably a bit fast @Martin.A and risked possible damage to fine blood vessels in your eyes, so I would recommend not being too impatient and just making slow and steady changes to diet and exercise and your fasting readings will eventually come down but they are usually the last ones to show improvement, so don't worry too much, providing you are seeing things heading in the right direction with your other readings. Slow and steady progress is the way to go.

Aim to reduce it slowly, not quickly.

My first HbA1C was 72 about three weeks ago and yesterday’s was 69. Thanks for the advice about reducing slowly will just focus on getting all levels lower gradually and monitor my food to see what effects that has. Dr suggested they were likely to put me on meds but won’t know for definite till I get a further appointment. Figured the more info I can give them the better their response will be.

Unfortunately no one told me that at the time (March 2019) and I didn't join the Forum until the beginning of May that year, with the access to all the knowledge, experience and advice that the Forum brings, so what's done is done. My two eye screenings since have been normal so hopefully no harm.
I appreciate that and it is likely that you got away with it but just wanted to ensure that Vicky didn't assume from your post that 4 weeks was a good time scale to aim for. 3 months would probably be a more realistic and safe target for getting fasting readings into range on a regular basis.

People often comment that their fasting reading is the last to come down into line @VickyHW

Hopefully you can continue your steady progress and it will eventually get the message! :D
