Fasting before HB1AC..

If it's just for the HbA1c, then you don't need to fast, but if they are testing fr other things at the same time you may have to. When I get and HbA1c I get a whole raft of other tests at the same time (although I don;t have to fast for any of them). Some labs like a fasting test for cholesterol, for example.
 
That's a very odd thing for them to have said Richard. Fasting is a very useful technique (for testing basal for example). I've a pump clinic in a few weeks and have been instructed to fast 3 times before that (to cover most of the 24hr period)

As long as you are testing during the fast (and stop if any nasty levels during it), it's perfectly fine
