Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, new to forum but long time type 1 diabetic.

Wanted to know whether I was in the minority with regard to reaction from family. I have brains etc and very independent regarding diabetes (hate feeling out of control and do not allow diabetes to rule my life and put on the smiley face mask to prove that everything is ok). Some family have attitude that I am brainless and can be treated differently because I have this "imperfection".

Don't say it is my imagination because others have noticed it as well.

I am feeling frustrated, irritated and totally annoyed that they feel they can get away with it.

Has anyone else found this to be the case regarding this very special health problem?

hi and firstly welcome to the site mormac, i wont tell you its your imagination or your being paranoid sometimes family think there doing there best when infact there actullay making a bigger deal of diabetes then needed, they may think oh my god what can we do to help we need to treat them diffirent wrap them up in cotton wool or whatever when infact id say the only time you may need abit of attention is your hypoing/hypering where diabetes is concerned etc etc , i think sometimes they over react the issue as there way of dealing with it , there child/bro/sis or whomever now has this condition all of a sudden and they have to get there head around it but sometimes it does get on your nerves as you feel your getting special treatment" when all you want is to get on with , the 1 thing that bugs me most is ohh can you still eat that ohh we cant have that now steff is here like im going to burst out crying if i so much am 100 yards within sum1 with a choccie bar lol, I am pleased you have such a great attitude though not letting it get you down and taking control , im my case i have no family near me so i dont have to deal with it but some mates do treat me like you described

Hi MorMac, welcome to the forum🙂 It rather sounds to me that those making such suggestions are the ones with limited brain capacity! Have you tried explaining to them that diabetes is to do with the PANCREAS, not the brain? 🙄

Sorry you're having to put up with such a stupid response to it.

I have an aunt who's paraplegic and the number of people who speak to me instead of her drives us both daft. Like the waitress in a restaurant when we were ordering who asked me what my aunt would like. I said "I don't know why don't you ask her?". People just assume she's mentally deficient. Her legs don't work but her mind is a sharp as a tack.

Perhaps you should sit them all down and explain that while you have this disease, it doesn't affect your mental capacity and would they please stop treating you differently.

Hi MorMac, welcome aboard.

Sorry to hear you're not being treated "normally" Not really sure what to suggest, what about loosing your cool and shouting your head off at them all?? Probably not the best idea but it might work??

Anyway stick around you may find this place helps you in other ways I certainly think it's a god send!

Take care

Rossi:D

Hi Mormac, welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear your family think your brain is impaired by your diabetes, they're the dummies, lol, not you. I can't say I have the same problem, my lot still treat me like the same ol skivvy they always have done, lol, no special treatment for moi!!

Have a look around the boards and I hope you like what you see. It's a very friendly and informative place.

xx
