Emma Cadywould, mother of a six-month-old son, lost her life when hit by a train on a bleak stretch of Wiltshire railway line. No one will ever understand exactly what happened that cold morning four years ago, just nine days before Christmas.

‘‘We know she was struck by a train, and we know she had been experiencing severe perinatal depression (PND),” says her younger sister Lucie Holland, 33. “But that is all.’’

What is known, however, is that with the right care and specialists in place, Emma could have recovered from PND. She had desperately sought help from mental health professionals and, in her final few weeks, had struggled to eat or sleep, existing in a state of terrible anguish. Yet, it seems, her cries of pain were not taken seriously enough.
