It's doubtful many students had a first year of high school similar to the one Zak Phillips had.

Just under two years ago, he was contemplating the move from Pop Warner to the high school football team when the three-sport athlete was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes was formerly known as juvenile diabetes and is not linked to what a person eats or obesity. It is an autoimmune system disease in which the body's immune system prevents the body from producing insulin. Zak was diagnosed in April 2011, after his parents noted physical changes while on a family vacation. Most notable was his constant need to drink and urinate, weight loss and a change in his breath.
