Facemasks to be made compulsory and part of uniform at school

Fair enough, any added security should be welcomed. It's not government advice though. But then common sense seems to have been abandoned in the English government advice.

Looks like teaching unions are pushing for them across all secondary schools

many adults are still not complying, in a shop where i go i have now seen quite a few entering with no masks. yesterday i was at the till and behind me was a woman quite clearly in breach and worse tried to stand right next to me, seriously.

Pete has just gone out specifically to go to the bank to deposit a cheque that's been sitting here since April after SORN-ing the motorhome. So no doubt I'll soon hear about 'what it's like' in the nearby town .....

further to this people can be exempt with certain medical conditions but then i have found out that our local shop is not going to challenge anyone who doesn't go in wearing a mask which does leave it open to abuse, think i have heard this before.

also found out today that a large supermarket is also not bothering to check

I don't think anywhere's likely to check even if they could (I doubt they'd know the particular medical conditions and I doubt most people with them would have suitable evidence) so properly enforcing the rules just isn't practical (and I doubt was ever intended). I could imagine the occasional fine being issued (if some shop were having particular problems then maybe police might fine some people just to make a point, likely with press releases shortly after).

I think the idea's to get a reasonable level of compliance (so 90% or above) just because it makes sense.

Obviously, it would have been made much more effective had our government followed the advice of their social science advisors and given the policy good publicity, emphasising why we should wear a face covering and how best to do so, and making free masks available for those who would otherwise have a problem. And maybe they will do those things a few weeks too late.

Great Idea, especially about them being free at source! e.g outside shops.

I'm fairly sure some public health people have suggested that kind of thing: if you want people to do something slightly annoying, at least make it easy. (I'm a bit surprised supermarkets aren't doing that yet, though I'm fairly sure I did see a bin for used masks in one. Though maybe it was for gloves, since I think at least one nearby was offering gloves (along with cleaning stuff).)

Presumably we will get that kind of thing (mask dispensers and things). Just seems a bit of a shame that it apparently has to happen too late to help with the beginning of the policy.

On the other hand, I suspect overall most people are wearing a mask most of the time when they're supposed to. Just as most people didn't crowd beaches and most people didn't crowd in London parks. The exceptions are generally what's news.

I thought you had come up with the idea! lol I was very impressed.
Yes, it does all seem a bit backwards, masks and social distancing could have been tried before bringing in a lockdown, and of course (free) masks should have been worn during lockdown.

I saw interesting thoughts about parallels with encouraging condom use with the suggestions that the things that work are: giving them out free, social pressure (if your friends are using them then you will too), visibility in adverts/information to normalise usage, don’t shame people for not using them, don’t lie that it sucks and isn’t very comfortable.

That was the context I saw it in, yes. (Though other people commented that condom use never got that high even with the threat of AIDS.)

Masks are supposed to be single use anyway, so one could literally pick up as you go in and drop in a bin on the way out.
