I went to the opticians today as my eyesight has been getting so bad...at night as it's getting dark, I can hardly see a thing..everything is blurry.

Now, my friend was telling me that I shouldn't go and get tested because as my sugars are high, it's going to affected my vision. However, I really cannot put up without seeing clearly.
So I went to my optician, and she was shocked at how much my prescription had changed, and so i ordered new glasses, and got new contacts. I am looking forward to tomorrow and being able to see clearly!
the optician is writing to my GP to tell her how bad my eyes have got over such a short space of time.
I have got my retinopathy appointment next thurs.

Can I expect my eyes to improve if my BS does, or will it stay the same or get worse...or is there no way of knowing??

Hi, I'm afraid your friend was right, it's not a good time to get new glasses when your levels are so high - and your optician should have known this :( When I was diagnosed I couldn't read a thing in hospital, and it was very poor for a few weeks afterwards - I had to use my reading glasses, plus a magnifying glass, to read a book and had to increase the font size on my computer. Then everything returned to normal. It's likely that this will happen to you too and your new contacts and glasses will be of little use.

p.s. this isn't the same as retinopathy, it's due to the shape of the lens altering due to the high glucose levels, and it is temporary whilst you get your levels under control 🙂

Hmm, ok, i am happy to stick with the contact lenses as they are only a month supply and means i can see nicely whilst i am sorting myself out. She wants to see me again in 6 mths...should things have settled by then, or are we talking about daily changes?

I might email the head office and complain then if the optician should have known better than to prescribe new glasses...would i have a valid complaint?

They werent expensive glasses, but its not the point i guess...

I'm not sure whether there are different levels of optician where one might be expected to know and another not - perhaps someone else can help explain? I'm not really familiar with the profession, having only had two checks in the past 6 years (and no checks up until then for 30 years! 😱 I've certainly heard other members say that their optician wouldn't issue a new prescription because it was caused by their high levels leading up to, and for a while after, diagnosis.

Things should definitely have settled by 6 months! For me I think it was about a month or so 🙂

Thankyou 🙂. I might ring round others opticians and see what they say...then i know whether to seek further advice.
