Just got back from the doctors, he's put my Metformin up to 3 times a day from 2.
And also said I need to go see an optician, I take it that I will have to pay for the test and any glasses I need? If so does anyone know roughly how much?

Thanks in advance

Davey

As a diabetic you don't have to pay for the eye test (sight test) although you will have to pay for glasses. The other test that we get as diabetics is a 'retinopathy scan' where a camera takes photos of the retinas at the back of your eyes. These are then checked to ensure that there is nothing amiss that might affect your ability to see, as opposed to your ability to focus.

You shouldn't have to pay for the test Davey, but the glasses will cost you. Not everyone knows but you don't have to buy where you are tested! Just take the results slip from the optician and then you can buy your new glasses where ever you like, in fact some places do special deals, BOGOF (buy one get one free) for example or free coatings on your lenses.
I bought mine from the specialist who the Doctor sent me to because they did buy one get one at half price and they put the special coatings on both for free. I also got free cases for both sets too.
My two pairs and all the acoutriments cost ?120. Not bad I thought, however I didn't go for Designer frames or anything fancy.
Hope this helps, good luck!

Just an additional thought - you shouldn't have your sight tested for several weeks after diagnosis, as the high BG levels you will have had prior to diagnosis can affect your sight. As your treatment begins to take effect your eyesight should return to normal, so if you'd had your eyes tested before this happens then it would be pointless. My eyesight was badly affected for about 6 weeks after my diagnosis.

Also, as Jimbo says you don't need to buy where you are tested - I bought my glasses (just reading glasses, nothing fancy!) from the web and they were ?13! 🙂

Northie I proudly proclaim you an honoury Scot, ?13! not even I'm that tight and my glasses are just for reading too! :D:D:D

Hehe! I'm a Yorkshireman! 🙂

Sorry but beat you!!! I got reading glasses from my local chemist for less than ?10 a pair..................which is handy as I've put them all over the house and my desk at work.........I think the students think I'm strying to impersonate a well known detective when I stand there looking at their work with my glasses and magnifying glass:D

Haha! Actually, they sent me a ?5 voucher off my next pair, so technically I beat you 😉 Why do opticians charge so much when they can be bought so cheaply elsewhere? Think I'm due for some new ones as I have to wear my old ones much more this year. I'm due for a sight test, but not sure what will happen when I go to the eye hospital at the beginning of November about my 'mild diabetic eye disease' - should I get my eyesight tested before or after? Not sure which would be better.

OK you win on the price of glasses!! Please let us know how you get on in November, I will be thinking about you then. As it is the macula that they are checking probably best to hold off on the reading glasses until you've been to the hospital as they may be able to improve the maculas. I had my eyes checked at the opticians three Thursdays ago. Went to pick up the distance glasses the following Wednesday and caused total confusion.....the glasses didn't seem right so they carried out the tests again and my long vision had improved by three lines in one week......I wonder why my friends think that I'm awkward???!!!!🙄
