Hi, I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago withn typ2, I am on Metformin and statins, since taking them my eye sight is a bit blurry, that now I am using my reading glasses all the time, has anyone else experienced this problem.

Hi Sally and welcome to the forum, have you been told about the Retinopathy sreenings us diabetics get, you usually have one in the first 6 months of being diagnosed, but if your worrying over this blurtness best advice I can give is book an appointment with your optician, tell them your diabetic on the phone

p.s They do actually do retinopathy screenings in some opticians now so it could be a quicker route for you .

Hi Sally

Welcome to the forum.

Can't speak from a T2 perspective, but my eyesight goes fuzzy whenever my BGs have run high for quite a while. It clears up whenever I get my BGs back in range. Some people have also commented that various things like this (or pain in the legs for example) seem to show up when the average BG levels are changing for the better after having been high for a long time pre-diagnosis.

Hope it clears up for you soon.

If you've not found them already, you might find some useful bits of information in the 'Useful Links' thread: http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=10406

Particularly 'Jennifers Advice'

Lots of forum T2s also speak very highly of Gretchen Becker's book 'Type 2 Diabetes, the first year'

I just had my first retinopathy screening and asked at the same time about the blurred vision. The blurring is a different issue and it is apparently quite common for newly diagnosed T2 people to have experienced this phenomenon, like many I thought my specs needed changing but the effect was not quite like just not focussing properly, now that my BG's are much better controlled following diagnosis and action the blurring has pretty much gone. Indeed my eyesight seems better than it has for some time. It seems to be yet another effect of raised BG levels which is not explained very well but if you are worried then do go to see an optician. I would suggest, as in my own case, that if you are thinking of getting new specs don't bother until BG levels are controlled or stablised or I understand your sight will still be adjusting. Remember that this is quite different to the need for retinopathy screening so make sure you are signed up for that too.

Hi Sally, welcome to the forum 🙂 Can't add much to what the others have said! I also found that my eyesight was very blurry when I was first diagnosed and for a few weeks afterwards - I even needed to buy a magnifying glass! Hopefully, things will return to normal soon now that you are diagnosed and receiving treatment 🙂

Hey Sally,

I remember panicking like mad just after I had been diagnosed as my eyes went really blurry. I remember one night getting in to a right state as I could not even see the infomation screen on the TV when flicking through the channels!

It sorted itself out pretty quickly though and in many ways blurred vision for a while is a good sign as it shows the tablets are working 🙂

One other quick point - when I went to the opticians shortly after this, they said that they would not be able to prescribe specs until the sugar levels were under control - as potentially the results could change within a few days and therefore the type of prescription needed would change.

Saying that though I didnt go back until 12 months later as things sorted themselves out and Im sure they will with you 🙂

I had this problem exactly as you describe when I was first diagnosed, it passes after ( in my case) a few weeks. It was very scary and I needed to wear reading glasses to see tv . It was embarrassing at my orchestra rehearsal when I had to try several different pairs of glasses to see the music even slightly!
Hang in, it improves when things settle a bit.
