Eye screening

I went owner to Oban today. Overcast (thank goodness - forgot the RayBans). No problem found. Textbook retinae, after 21 years insulin addiction.

Cool😎

Excellent result Mike. I had a good result on mine too this week. We have to be cut a break some time! 🙂

That is good news

Great!

Wish I had - annual optician sight test yesterday - sight in both eyes has deteriorated and the reason I have a permanent blur across my sight in the left one is because the cataract they declined to operate on this time last year after saying they both needed it and asking me which one I wanted done first and had that sorted, has grown more. Absolutely no surprise to either of us and of course the 'good' eye has had to work harder to try and compensate for its opposite number in the interim. We were - and are - both cross about that. So I'm being referred again. Hey ho.

Sorry to hear that Jenny. I have a cataract affecting visual acuity too but thankfully the back of my eye seems ok.

Dinnae fash, Jenny, once you get the cataract done it will transform your life. You'll be after a 4K Ultra HD tv like I was. 15 minute job. Hardly time to work up a curse. But then, there is the waiting list....

Well as we're off on holiday in July until the middle of September, I'll probably find I've failed to turn up for 3 appointments and been taken off the list and have to start all over again - much like Pete with his cancer - by the time we return.

My guess is you'll get your first appointment before you go, so you could tell Mr Eye Surgeon that you're going away till September, at which point he will burst out laughing, and tell you to be back for Christmas.

This forum is always so dull when you're not around, there's nobody to argue with:(

LOL - I'd miss you terribly too.

The only snag with what you're saying is that because doctors record that the patient won't be in the country between X and Y on your notes and the appointment system is outsourced to non-medical personnel in a totally different location, they never see that note. Of course if you know the name of the doctor by then you can ring his secretary, but actually this is quite challenging from halfway up a Pyrenee with an iffy mobile phone signal ! LOL

You have to take into consideration Mike, that a GP won't see the referral form until at the earliest next Tuesday. Then they need to agree it and get someone to fax it to Choose and Book. Could also happen Tuesday if they aren't busy but they won't action it till Weds. Then produce their letter and send it me second class. Been lucky so far and usually had it within 10 days, but you need to allow 21 days before chasing it up. On receipt, I then need to ring them to find out what the waiting lists are at the various locations, make my choice, and book. They then inform the location, who in turn then need to send me a clinic appointment, in the second class post.

Be amazing by then, if I got a first appointment before we go, for anything non life threatening. The good thing is if I choose the hospital I had the first one done, some of the appointments can be changed over the phone - though the written confirmations always come from somewhere entirely different to Nuneaton - eg Tamworth or Northampton or somewhere else I can't remember. This hospital also doesn't use envelopes marked NHS - so being as there's an address label on the front (our address I mean) and it's a smaller envelope not the usual NHS size, we tend to assume it's a circular until we open it !

Hi MikeyB,
Pleased to hear you had a good result.
I am due my first eye screening in July and I am petrified.
Scared of having it done and worried about what the result will be. Very anxious.

First eye screening is a bit scary, because of fear of the unknown.

Allow plenty of time for journey (and finding right location in hospital, if that's where it's being done). As you can't drive immediately afterwards, it's best to get someone else to drive - friend / relative / bus or taxi driver. Having said that, I cycle home after my checks, but they're after dark on winter afternoons.
Take sunglasses and / or a hat with peak or brim, as drops dilate your pupils to let in more light.
Let the people doing checks know that it's all new to you and ask anything that's unclear.

Try to look at all 'tests' the same way.

The sooner they do the tests, the sooner they and we, will find out if there's any problem. The sooner we all know there IS a problem with anything - the sooner we can sort the pesky thing out before it has a chance to become a serious problem.

A positive win-win situation for us !
