Eye Screening

Hi jjj., welcome to the forum.

It's natural to feel worried given that there's often little explanation on the process. These tests are just so they can ensure that your eyes are healthy in a way that goes beyond the standard measures.

The Specsavers link above is quite informative, we've had a few conversations re eye tests on the forum so feel free to do a search and have a look at some of the experiences from the community.

Well once they can see the picture a bit better (which is all they want to do) they'll either say there is something up, or that there isn't. No point whatever in panicking at this stage frankly. PITA of course, mainly not literally on the whole - but then most medical tests are, aren't they?

I'd never say 'Don't worry' cos of course you will, until you get the answer.

Is this an NHS letter or a letter from a private Optician perhaps the one who was contracted to do your retinal screening. I know some areas still offer retinal screening service within the NHS and some I believe contract to franchise Opticians like Specsavers. I just wonder if this letter is drumming up private work for the optician, rather than being necessary and requested by the NHS. Maybe I am being a bit too cynical....

Hi
Says i need to have OCT scan
I have one every year as part of my normal eye test at specsavers. It just gives a picture of the back of your eye. No pain at all.

Hi

NHS letter.Had the scan.Just have to wait for the results

Are you recently diagnosed with diabetes?

Hi
I was diagnosed with type 2 in 2009 put on tablets. Then 11 months later was taken into hospital after a very high reading. The Consultant there said i had been misdiagnosed and i was type 1.From then i have been on insulin

Was just thinking if you had been newly diagnosed and started on insulin, it could have perhaps dropped very high levels a bit too quickly and possibly caused a small bleed, but if you have been on insulin for quite a few years, that is less likely.

I think the OCT scan just gives them a little more detail than the regular screening. I am sure if there was anything serious on the original scan, they would be giving you an emergency appointment at the hospital not asking for a further scan at the opticians. Were you able to get any information or reassurance from the clinician doing the OCT?

There are lots of treatment options these days if you need them so try not to panic too much but I have heard of some people here on the forum that get these appointments and then get told what the issue is but that it doesn't need any treatment at that time and they will just monitor for 6 months..... so just because you have this appointment, doesn't mean you will definitely need treatment, but there are plenty of treatment options available if you do. (((HUGS)))
