Took my daughter to the opticians yesterday as she has been suffering blurred vision and headaches even when sugar levels OK. Couldn't correct her eyesight with a prescription so now being referred to a specialist. I asked if this is diabetes related but optician said they didn't know. Trying to be sensible and convince myself that having been diagnosed 2 years its unlikely to be due to diabetes but freaking out a bit. Anyone had anything similar?

One of my eyes has vision which prescriptions don't correct. I did discover by accident that with the prescription I have and a coloured (blue ruler) it brought things into focus. I have not pursued that as my eyes have been like this for years and I am really only getting vision from the other eye, but maybe its something you could look into. I know that they use colour lens with dyslexia so wonder if its something similar.

May not be what your daughter has but mine has cataracts caused by Diabetes despite being only dx last year - we are waiting to see the surgeon to see if they will operate. It is very rare but dont let your team tell you it is impossible (as ours did) because its not Good luck hope you can get this sorted whatever it is

If your daughter has had high sugar levels for a while this can cause the lenses to change shape (due to osmosis, I think) and this blurs vision. I remember a few people in my "newly diagnosed" education class had this. I think they were reassured that it would get better as sugar levels improved.

You've done the right thing in getting seen by a specialist though - always best to get something like that checked out.

My eyes were horrid as soon as I was DX and given insulin, they never settled for over 2 months and it's dead boting not being able to read or watch telly or knit or anything, I was raring to go back to work but you can hardly be a clerk if you can't read or write ..... fine afterwards once they'd settled.

Mandy, your daughter isn't newly diagnosed though, is she?

I don't understand why they couldn't tell you anything; if there was nothing to see they wouldn't - well couldn't! - have referred you. So what's the big secret?

Try going in to opticians without your daughter and requesting to be told what they suspect?

Thanks for the advice. Seems a little less daunting now I know that others have had problems. Will definitely go back to the opticians without her to see if the optician is willing to say anything they wasn't willing to say in front of her. Hoping to see the specialist in a couple of weeks and will bear in mind what everyone has said about their experiences.
