A medical van carrying equipment to prevent blindness caused by diabetes will be put to work in nine aboriginal communities in Queensland in February.

The Queensland government has provided $5 million to fund the 20-metre long, van.

Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said it would support 27 Aboriginal medical services by travelling to nine medical hubs at Mount Isa, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Hervey Bay, Morayfield, Toowoomba and Charleville.

?A van equipped with state of the art optical equipment will travel to these nine regional hubs where local and visiting eye specialists will treat patients," he said.
