After my diagnosis of diabetes T2 in March last year I had my first diabetic eye examination.(all was good). Since then I have moved house, so have registered with a different optician. I have managed to book an appointment for end of next month and was asked if I wanted an OCT scan to photograph back of eye, if so I would have to pay £25 for it. Last year it was included free of charge, but I was told today NHS doesn't include this part of the eye examination. I thought this was an important part of the diabetic eye checks, and was included, (as it was last year at my previous opticians). Should I try a different optician?

The OCT scan is different to the diabetes retinal scan, the diabetes one is 2D photos whereas the OCT is more of a 3D image. Even if you have the OCT one you should have the diabetes one too, I pay £10 for the OCT one at spec savers.

Thank you for this info Lucy.

No! - because these photos are NOT retinal photos by the NHS for the purposes of checking to see if people with diabetes have retinopathy or other eyesight problems. They are OK in addition to the proper retinal scans, but not instead of them. So please yourself whether you have them or not. Your actual eye test is fee of charge as you are diabetic.

Contact your local service to see when your NHS retinopathy check is due.
