My dad has diabetes due to pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Chemotherapy has made his hands extremely sore and it’s very difficult to get blood from his fingers. Can you check your glucose levels anywhere else other than your fingers as he is in a terrible state trying to get any blood out. Any advice really appreciated.

Hello Octavia,
Sending you and your Dad my best wishes.
In answer to your question yes you can take blood from the arm as well, certain meters have a little device with them to enable people to do this. Personally I can not see why you need the device so just have a go at doing an arm poke, obviously your dad needs to experiment with the depth of the poker.

You can use toes and earlobes as well as fingers.

Can you contact the chemo dept and tell them about his sore hands? I say this because he can't be the only one with this; it may well not matter to others but it's the opposite for your dad. I know the radiologists can recommend prescription drugs for skin probs caused by radiography cos they did for my husband's irritated bum cheeks when he had radiography after removal of his prostate cancer - and the X-rays were delivered from the front not the rear! Hence, I'd definitely ask them.
