expired license

Hi,
Back in March 2017 I got the renewal form for my license but I put it in my bedroom drawer and forgot about it. Today while my sister was driving my car (she is insured as the second driver) police stopped her and told her that the first driver on the insurance has a reworked license so the insurance is invalid for both of you. Its to late to call dvla now but is an expired license same as a revoked one? I haven't had any severe hypo and I had just forgotten to fill in the form. The policeman let her drive home but said if anything happens its on her and not to drive until she is insured by removing me from the policy. Its my car so I'm not ready to remove myself unless dvla says I need to. The car is parked on moms driveway and I took the bus home.

Well they expire automatically if the holder doesn't apply to them to renew it.

Same as all of us when we get to our 70th birthday - if we want to keep the licence - we have to apply to DVLA to renew it. It's exactly the same for us every 3 years - if we don't apply to renew it - we no longer have a licence.

Thank you. Its basic common sense is it not. Procrastinating didnt do me any favours. I need to be grateful to be reminded before anything untoward happened and being told my insurance was invalid.
