My dsn has pretty much left me to set it up my self the problem is some of the terms , i have never heard of let alone understand ie the time blocks is my main prob but im sure i will find more.

Hi - I assume your asking about the pump? The time blocks on mine are hourly eg 1 to 2am. My insulin changes by the hour eg higher at night than at other times.
I've had my pump long enough so that I can increase my units myself - but still rely on the manual at times to help me do it.
Hope this helps, but if you need any more information, I'll try to help. 🙂

Hi no i just have the meter.thanks for help.

Hi Carol. I had an expert before I got my pump and used it for the bolus advice. My carb: insulin ratios varied during the day, for example for breakfast I needed 1 unit for 1g of carbs, for lunch 1 unit for 2.5g and for dinner 1 unit for 3g carbs so I had 3 "time blocks" so that I could program in the different ratios. I hope that helps a bit. Ask away as you find them. Are you coming to the Oxford meet? I could help you out with it then if you like?

Thanks for the replys this has helped,
unfortunatly i wont be able to make the meet.

Hi Caroleann.

I've had an Expert for about a week or so and am finding it really useful.

It is a bit complicated to set up. Have you managed to fathom the time slots now or would you still like some help ?🙂

I think i may have done it but will let you know if i hhave managed to mess that up or anything else.
thanks

They gave me a huge manual with mine, but once set up it is easy, have you got help yet? I could scan some details, or at least the bit about setting up the time blocks. I set mine to synchronise with mealtimes, so I have 5 timeblocks: breakfast, lunch, dinner, before bed and overnight. The results on the graphs are then comparable.

I love it, some glitches, but better than any other and I know the calculations are correct. Before that I used an insulin calculator app and diabetes diary, but my DSN couldn't cope with the results!

Best of luck!

Think i may have it worked out now, my only queary is, i tested 8.8 and put my carbs in and was adviced to take 9 units but i know that is to much for my breakfast so i stuck to the 7 units i normaly take.

Slightly surprised your DSN just 'left you to it' tbh. That's the whole point of the DSN-only distribution... You need a decent training/handover session to help get you started!

I used the Expert solidly for a year and got great help/support from lovely (Danish?) peeps on their careline when ever things had me completely stumped.

Ask away if other questions come up and if none of us knows the answer to you could always request a call from them.

Hi Caroleann

The 'Experts' advice will always aim to get you to the mid-point of the target range you have specified (which you can vary at different times of day if you want to be higher going to bed).

So if you specify 4-8 as your target it will aim to pull you back to 6mmol/L.

If your meal calculation would normally be 7u, it looks at your current BG, and your 'insulin sensitivity' (the amount you would expect BG to reduce by if you took 1u of insulin) for that time of day and adds a correction amount.

eg. 7.2u for Carbs, 1.3u to reduce BG by 2.8mmol/L (to get to 6.mmol/L) = 8.5u.
Whole units only therefore round up to 9u

It would do the same if you were at 4.1mmol/L (except that it would reduce your dose).

The final screen of the 'bolus advice' gives a breakdown of the calculation so you can see if it is rounding up or down. Did that make any sense?

The Expert is a great meter and can be very precise. I see you're on Novorapid. Have you asked your DSN if you can have a half-unit pen - Novopen Demi? This helps to make the corrections much more accurate.

As others have said the setting up is crucial but once it is don't be afraid to trust it. If you think it's suggesting too much then on one occassion maybe try it out and but test every fifteen minutes to see who was right.

I would just like to thank you all for your help, although i still have one or two things to sort out im happy with the way things are going it all seems to tally up so for now im going to keep as i am until i see the dietition on the 26th.
Of course the best bit is my bgs are all below 9,its been a long time since i have had readings like this:D🙂.
