Thank you both for the info and advice

Ive been diabetic for 15 yrs and this is the first time ive ever added to and posted on a forum

I have set my alarm for 2am to check my background dose over next few nights so hopefully will start waking with better sugars

Cheers 🙂

tried to bury head in sand i think. hated talking about my condition and feeling different to me mates. but that has got me nowhere so decided to embrace it and try and learn as much as poss about it all so that i can get better control and stop resenting my condition so much!

Oh and another question....

I have a nightmare with exercise and have always had to run my sugars high from lunch if i want to exercise after work before my dinner. find my sugars plummet with exercise. Any advice? Am hoping the aviva expert may help with this......

Exercise is a tricky one as people can vary so much in how they respond to it. I don't seem to have a problem during the actual exercise, but do need to reduce my post-exercise meal insulin and often reduce my basal too. Pumps are best in this respect because you can switch them off but you can't switch off injected insulin. I wonder if it has something to do with the timing of your exercise - how long after lunch/injecting do you normally exercise? You might be better trying to keep your levels in range after lunch and then having a cereal bar or something similar before exercising.

A very good book for explaining everything to do with diabetes and exercise is Diabetic Athlete's Handbook by Sheri Colberg. I was a runner before diagnosis, and this book helped me to understand my diabetes so I could get back into it afterwards 🙂

I would normally exercise at approx 5pm so 4-5 hrs aft lunch. If i have an exercise class tho it may not be til 8pm that i have my tea. I am thinking about asking my work that i start later in dayu so i can exercise 1st thinmg in morning when i am more insulin resistant so that i can work with insulin as opposed to against it! 😎

I always exercise in the morning, wakes you up for the day and gets the endorphins flowing! 🙂 It's interesting that you drop low when, in theory, the insulin from your lunch injection should have cleared your system - if I exercise more than 3 hours after injecting I'd go high due to the fact that I would have insufficient circulating insulin.

all a bit confusing! im hoping that once i start to understand how it all works better it will make more sense. def gona start trying to exercise first thing tho and see if that helps with control

My blood has dropped from 6.5 to 5.4 in half an hr. Insulin i did for bfast shud hav stopped working at 11.15 so is it my basal that is causing this continued drop? wanted to pop up to town b4 eat my lunch but now worried that il hypo if i do.....

eek and now its 4.1 so gotta eat. think i need to reduce my background.....

I moved these posts to their own thread as they are drifting away from the original topic 🙂

Have you tried doing a basal test? It does sound as though you may have too high a dose if you are dropping after your bolus has expired, both now and when you exercise long after lunch. Part of the problem can also be that your insulin sensitivity increases through the day, so the basal that keeps you steady overnight might be too much once you are up an about🙄 Many people find that splitting their basal into two injections helps overcome this problem. My basal is so low it's not really an option for me, but it seems to be fairly accurate (at the moment!).

I do split the dose and do one at bfast and 1 at bed

I have found my basal has been pushed up and up over last yr due to my insulin resistant increasing. I had managed to get my basal right down when i lost 2 and 1/2 stone for my wedding in 2010 however with my having put most of that back on since then my basal has increased. I am watching what i eat and about to start weightwatchers again so hoping that this will mean basal reduction.

I find in general my sugars are high in morning when wake up but can go low pre lunch, dinner and bed although if honest In general they have been high which is why my hba1c is 9.8. However with my new monitor my sugars have been in single figures much more which is promising!

Is it an equal split, or do you give more in one injection than the other? I have found that my levels are much better when I am being more active and injecting lower doses, so hopefully the 'new you' will find this too! 🙂

they were the same but it seems i actually need a higher dose at night, due to tendancy to wake up high, than i need in the morning - presumably because im more active in day than night

yep hoping the changes im putting in place will finally get me the control i desperatly need

Hi again, following on from my comments in your pregnancy thread, again, soooooo many similiarities here too! I have had it for 12 years at 18, I also hated the illness while in my clubbing/drinking days and wanted to just be normal, I gained weight from good control and stopped taking my insulin over the years to stay slim, I DKA'd a fair bit in my early 20's but now the family plans have took priority, I decided to do as you and get control, I now see many benefits of this and I have the start of diabetic eye changes so needed to do something to control that too. From turning 30 last month, I now feel my future and plans are more important than staying slim to go out in skimpy clothes and 'pull' I leave that now to the new generation of youngsters!!!!

As for the fitness, I was taught on the DAFNE course that exercising on a BG of 10 or more will tend to raise the BG level as the energy isn't releasing into the body with the insulin. They recommended if it was higher than 10 to correct with a snack(carb counted as well) and that way the insulin will release the energy for exercise. Hope I made sense there and remembered everything right from the course!

OK so now i'm scared, u have literally just described my life!!

I was in a diabetic coma at 21 due to clubbing/drinking/drugs and ignoring my diabetes. Like u all that mattered to me was being like my friends and being as slim as possible but since meeting my husband 4 yrs ago my priorities have changed and now it's about having a long and healthy life with him - and hopefully a couple of rugrats!

I am going to try and start exercising in the morning where possible as much more insulin resistant first thing and when exercising aft work - i am about to start attending a zumba class! i will follow the dafne rules 🙂

Keep me posted with how it all goes with you and any pitfuls u coming accross - as considering we appear to be one and the same im sure i will experience the same problems too!! x
