If your child is due to take exams towards the end of this academic year, now is the time to start thinking about discussing with them and the school what arrangements can be put in place to support them. Top of the list of priorities should be what your child wants to do.
Some children like to have a room on their own as they don’t want to disturb everyone else if they need to treat a hypo, for example. Others like to be in the main room with everyone else, but sit near the door for a quick exit if necessary. These are just two examples of what can be arranged, so please encourage your child to think about what they want to do without worrying about any other factors.
It’s a good idea to test BGs before starting the exam to ward off any potential problems, in as much as this is possible anyway, we all know diabetes has a mind of its own! 🙄
If they do need to stop during the exam for any reason connected to diabetes, the clock should be stopped and the time taken for treatment added on at the end.
Diabetes UK has a more thorough guide available free from the website shop, https://shop.diabetes.org.uk/collections/information-for-you To save you looking, it’s on the third line up from the bottom of the page. 🙂
