Treating obesity is a complex problem for both the victims of this disorder and those of us who try to treat it. There are some folks who believe that it is just a part of their life, which must be accepted. Others struggle with it daily, using diet and exercise to let their ideal weight selves out of their prison of fat. Still others choose to take drugs, or even have drastic surgeries in the effort to “cure” obesity.

Recently, the medical community has generally decided to treat obesity as a disease instead of a condition. Insurance companies are also recognizing this shift, such that they are agreeing to pay for treatment of obesity in many cases. However, obesity is going through much the same problems that alcoholism and drug addiction experience in that many people still think they are just lifestyle choices rather than “real diseases.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the combination of bupropion/naltrexone to be known as Contrave for the treatment of obesity.
