Every Health Secretary of the last 20 years says Tories are failing the mentally ill

Every health secretary of the last 20 years has joined an attack on the Tory government for failing the mentally ill.

The nine politicians say "warm words" came to nothing and cuts have left patients "shunted across the country in search of a hospital bed".

Their joint letter has been written just as the NHS's own figures show death rates for mental health patients are getting worse.

For every 1000 people who die nationwide, 370 die after having a serious mental illness - a rate which has got worse every year since 2009/10.

It was at less than 330 when the Conservatives took office in 2010.
