Hi Everyone,

Just back from the doctor and feel so downhearted....😱

I never fully understand how they can check my Hba1C by just pricking my finger and leaving me to wait? Anyway bad news is that Hba1c is now 7.8% which is way up on my last one which was 6.9%. I got the impression that the doctor wasn't too pleased!

As I have tried to explain, (Norwegian doctor), I am in the midst of the perimenopausal mystery and have not had a p for over 5 months now. Each month, I have been suffering from cystitis and wondered whether or not an unidentified UTI was the culprit, but he checked my urine sample and told me it was perfect?? It's only since my p stopped, that my blood glucose levels have been going haywire. Usually high in he morning and coming down to around 6.9 - 7.2 by the evening.

What I don't understand, is anything, I have been stricter with myself the last couple of months. I have not bread or pasta for over 2 weeks and have really limited myself to very small portions of brown rice and potatoes. I have been walking, but I have to exercise more so and cut down even further.

He didn't say very much but did emphasise to me that I was on a very low dose of metformin (500mg) and he didn't want me to go up a dose as he thought that might start another period.

I have looked into this until I am "blue" in the face and it has to be the hormones which are doing this. When I was on 2 x 500mg dose a year ago, I felt great as the Metformin was obviously controlling my hormones.

I feel a bit of a failure and am standing at the bottom of a very big mountain!

I'm not so naive, to know that increased exercise will help, but how much per day? Can anyone advise me please.

I honestly feel as if I am banging my head against a brick wall, as I know I have been strict with diet and to get this lousy result sucks!

Donna 🙂

Hi Donna,

HBA1c tests can be done in surgeries using a finger prick test if the surgery has invested in this type of machine.

Did the Dr. suggest any other oral medications as he did not want you to increase the Metformin?

As you have been strict with yourself for the last two weeks, I would ask were you coping in the previous weeks with food intake or had you let it slip a bit. The HBA1c will be relevant for 8-12 weeks usually.

You are far from a failure, you are like the rest of us, human and wrestling with a problem. You are very aware that something needs to change but some of us can try forever but do need medication. It is not a failure but just that we are all different. In an ideal world, there would be a blueprint for managing Type 2 that we could all follow but it doesn't work like that. There are so many physiological factors to take into account too. Age, gender, stress levels, other medical issues...... the list is endless. I know sometimes there seems to be a competitive streak between diabetics but that is not the case here. We all try and help each other and failure is not a word to use.

You are trying your best and that is all that anyone can do. ((((hugs)))).

Hi Cherrypie,

The surgery must have one of those machines then.

To be honest, I haven't been doing anything different apart from the decreased exercise (too much snow) but I am going to bring up the exercise bike and start on that too. Sorry about any confusion, but I meant that I have been even more strict with my carb intake recently so hopefully, that may account for the next Hba1c.

Thanks for the support, I must admit I felt embarrased putting these abysmal figures up as I had been doing so well.

The doctor has asked to see me in 2 months time and recommended upping the exercise and watching my diet. The Metformin will get an appraisal then.

Donna 🙂
