Europe has had a surge in Covid-19 cases since governments began easing their lockdown rules, the World Health Organisation’s top officials has warned.

Dr Hans Kluge, the body’s regional director for Europe, said more than two dozen countries had recorded a resurgence of the virus.

“Last week, Europe saw an increase in weekly cases for the first time in months,” he said.

Thirty countries have seen increases in new cases over the past fortnight, he said, and 11 have seen a very significant resurgence.

I can’t say that any of the European countries on the list are on my bucket list to visit! (Apart from Sweden, which is vigorously denying that it should be on the list anyway)

France reported a surge in diagnosed cases yesterday. Think 1500 or so (1533 has stuck in my mind so perhaps that was the figure)

The same will happen in the the UK. I don't know about France, but other countries now have effective test, track and trace systems in place to contain any outbreaks. I hope England's creaky system can keep up.

Northerner,

You know what trump said to this the other day about these surges? He said as testing increases so will the number of diagnosed cases. He also said, if they stop testing, cases will stop being diagnosed too! It's all about the testing.

I know, that was my 'Trump laugh of the Day' 😱 :D And he has actually cut Federal funding for testing programmes, just as there is a new surge :( He is a danger to the American people :(

He's also got a net approval rating of less than -15, the lowest since Jan 2018, and a level worse ~100 days before the election than any president who won re-relection. They should just offer him an Emmy and his own late night show & get him to leave now.

Boris, of course, has now eased lockdown - god knows what will happen on July 4, and Boris certainly doesn't know.

What he has done to mask any upsurge is to stop the daily briefings, but of course that won't work. The information we will get will be from the SAGE committee and ONS unspun by politics. Then he will, unlike Trump, have to answer to parliament, which might be the end of him. The trouble is, there is only one member of the current cabinet who has the brains to be Prime Minister and that is Rishi Sunak. The chances of that happening are zero, because he has enough common sense to delay Brexit so a proper leave agreement can be reached, and he isn't white.
