Apparently the artificial smoke has been banned as it has genotoxicity,. Genotoxicity is the ability change the genetic structure causing cancers and affecting hereditary diseases. The UK will not be banning them but personally I will avoid them and other products with artificial smoke. Why? Since the Brexit nonsense I am concerned things may be done to show out independence from the EU rather than being viewed logically!

For the number of bags of crisps I eat each year (quite prob not one bag a month) this makes no difference whatsoever. We buy own brand bags of 6 pkts of ready salted and cheese & onion and share a bag between us some lunchtimes with a sandwich.

That probably explains why those little tubes of Austrian smoke flavoured cheese have disappeared from the supermarket too. It’s my son's favourite, and I always get some when he’s coming home.:(
It’s a bit late for me, to ban them, I’ve been eating smoke flavoured crisps and cheeses (in small quantities) for years. It’s a theoretical risk, apparently, so I’ll just assume that theoretically I’ll be fine!

Despite never liking bacon (yes, I am weird), I used to enjoy Frazzles when I was a kid.
I tried a pack a couple of years ago and was disappointed - they have changed. I haven't tried any since so the ban (or not) won't make any difference to me.
As for smoked cheese, once I discovered there was more on offer than DairyLea, the "sausages" of smoked cheese and ,as a holiday treat, La Vache Qui Rit, I became a vintage cheddar convert and ever looked back. Today, my (non cheeseboard) alternatives are more likely to be halloumi, feta or a goats cheese

I’ve never seen the need to flavour crisps with anything but salt (preferably shaken from a little twist of blue paper, but that ship sailed a long time ago :()

I've never seen a bag of smokey bacon crisps in Europe, maybe I don't go to the right countries. They don't seem to go in for flavoured crisps very much.

Some of this flavouring trend: crisps, coffee, coke, squash, etc. are beyond me. Some of the squashes are quite disgusting, becoming chemically and overly sweet! I imagine a TV chef will do pea flavoured roasties one day!

I have memories of “ Hedgehog Flavour Crisps,” back in the early 80s.
Yes, and more recent flavours have vanished like Tomato Ketchup flavour (which I rather liked). Not sure why. Wasn't there some production problem forcing a reduction in the less common flavours or something?

Oh NO!! I was pretty relaxed about this story as I’ve always had an aversion to smoky bacon potato crisps, but I have a real soft spot for Frazzles! (i know… i know…)

I think one certain brand of potato chip did “limited edition” flavours as a form of promotion?
If memory serves me well back in 2005 or 2010 there was a “salt & Lineker” flavour.
I actually tasted hedgehog crisps from a corner shop near my school back in the day. (1980.) Tasted like they were treated with ground black pepper more than salt.

My mum told me of those days. 🙂 I have memories of “ Hedgehog Flavour Crisps,” back in the early 80s.
You could collect a number of the blue salt papers (maybe 20?) and send them off to get a little metal badge proclaiming you to be a “Smith’s Twister” (this was the Chubby Checker era). I think I still have my badge somewhere!

Yes, I think one brand does one or two a year. I'm pretty sure I remember hedgehog flavour crisps, too.
I just remember being bemused by the concept as a kid especially when I used to sneak watching “Not the nine o’clock news” with the hedgehog sandwich. I’d put the box on whilst fixing hypos. I got some interesting first impressions on some radical stuff aired even later at night, with these lows. The 1968 movie “If” was one of them. Life of Brian was another. And this. Though, “PG” seem to remember it shown late?
I just cracked on with it back in the day with milk & Mars bars.

My mum was/is still now more Cole Porter? Telling stories about a sent down for a cut of cheese & the shopkeeper swiping a cat off the top of a giant block. She still has her tails. 🙂

When I was little I absolutely loved smoky bacon crisps(I loved frazzles more though)but after reading this I won't be eating them anymore...no way.

I briefly worked in a crisp factory wher the ‘flavours’ (chemicals) were sprayed onto the crisps.
I have eaten plain crisps ever since!

Everyone to their own taste of flavour of crisps, I’m still eating Smokey bacon crisps

Don't eat them often so no chance of giving them up either.

Must admit not many crisp flavours don't enjoy, like how in some cafes & restaurants a sandwich comes with side salad plus ready salted crisps, something about ready salted crisps going great with salads where no other flavour will do.
